Life's Cryptic Puzzle: Sermon From The Book of NieR Automata Outline

I will be creating a video sermon for you all as soon as my new equipment comes in tomorrow, but I wanted to give you a HeadStart on reading it as to what you can expect. I again appreciate everyone who has voted to support this movement and provided me with the ability to purchase new equipment. If you also have anything you want me to address let me know.
Additionally, if you don't mind an AI voice, I once gave my thoughts on the concept of God after beating NieR Automata and how we might have empathy for God.

“Turn on your consoles with me to the realm of NieR: Automata, chapter 1, verse 1, which reads…”
Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle...and wonder if we'll ever get the chance to kill him.
Today, we turn to NieR: Automata for a reflection on life’s most mysterious cycle—the spiral of life and death, the ups and downs, the victories and defeats. In these words, we find a feeling many of us know: the sense that life sometimes feels like a cryptic puzzle, a cycle that traps us, challenging us to find purpose amid it all.
Is it a curse, or a punishment? Or is it something else? Something we can find meaning in, even if we’re unsure of the designer behind it all.
1. The Spiral of Life and Death: A Shared Experience
The quote speaks of being trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. For us, this might not mean literal life and death every day, but cycles of struggle and growth, happiness and sorrow, or success and failure. Just like in NieR, each of us encounters this spiral, where we face loss, start over, and sometimes feel as though we’re trapped in patterns we can’t escape.
Reflection:
Life as a Series of Checkpoints: Much like in gaming, life gives us checkpoints and respawns. We face setbacks and frustrations, yet every time, we get the chance to try again. Is this repetition meaningless, or can we find purpose in each “respawn”?
Cycles as Learning Opportunities: Each turn of the spiral, each difficult moment, is a part of life’s cryptic puzzle. What if the spiral is not a punishment but a tool—a way to learn, to grow, to understand ourselves and the world better?
2. Is This a Curse or a Blessing?
The quote asks if this spiral is a curse or punishment. Many of us wonder this in our own lives, especially in times of hardship. Why do we face struggles? Why do we feel the pain of loss or the weight of challenges? Is life a test, or is it simply what it is—an experience, with all its highs and lows?
Reflection:
Finding Purpose in the Struggle: If the spiral is a curse, then everything we face would feel heavy, pointless, even punishing. But if it’s a challenge—a cryptic puzzle, a chance to see who we are under pressure—then we might approach it differently. We may even find strength and wisdom we didn’t know we had.
Choosing How We See Life’s Puzzle: In games and life, we can’t always control the obstacles in our way, but we can control how we approach them. NieR reminds us that we have a choice: to resent the spiral or to embrace it, finding our own meaning in each cycle.
3. The “God” Who Created the Puzzle
The final lines speak of a god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle and the hope of possibly one day killing him. This is powerful because it shows a longing for control, an urge to confront the force (or forces) behind our struggles.
Reflection:
Facing the Source of Our Frustration: Many of us experience moments where we want to “kill” the part of ourselves or the forces that hold us back—whether it’s self-doubt, fear, or society’s expectations. The desire to confront and overcome the “god” of our struggles is natural. And in some ways, this may mean killing off old beliefs, outdated expectations, or negative cycles that no longer serve us.
Embracing Empowerment, Not Defeat: While we may not fully understand the forces at play in life, we can still claim our power within it. By choosing how we respond to life’s challenges, we effectively “kill” the hold that uncertainty, fear, or anger has on us. We take control, finding empowerment even if we can’t escape the spiral.
4. The Cryptic Puzzle as a Path to Self-Discovery
If life is a cryptic puzzle, then we are each puzzle-solvers. Our role, as players in this game of life, is to explore the unknown, find our own way through the spiral, and take on the challenges that come our way.
Reflection:
Curiosity Over Certainty: The mystery of life might be frustrating, but it also invites us to approach the world with curiosity, not just resignation. We’re not given all the answers—and perhaps that’s the gift, the chance to define our own purpose.
Creating Our Own Meaning: Just as in NieR, where each character must navigate an uncertain world, we, too, get to decide what our journey means. Perhaps the spiral is not a trap or a punishment, but a call to grow, to understand, and to connect with others who walk their own paths.
Conclusion: Embracing the Spiral, Finding Our Power
We may never fully solve life’s cryptic puzzle, but each of us has the chance to find purpose, to take ownership of our journey, and to make choices that bring meaning into the spiral. We can choose to see life not as a punishment, but as an adventure—a game where every respawn, every restart, is a chance to try again, to find new meaning, and to create a life that’s truly our own.
So as we go forth, let’s remember the words of NieR: Automata. Let’s face life’s challenges as players with curiosity, courage, and resilience. GG’s, and may we find purpose in every step of the spiral.
