Very true. Considering this is an NSF-funded research expedition, they wasted possibly millions of government funds just because they were annoyed with their research leader (which they predicted would happen anyway) and, in the real world, they would have difficulty securing any form of public funding in the future at the very least. But I still found it funny after rewatching it.

The way people speak about different ethnicities has been changing and evolving for a while as social awareness expands, and iirc, at the time this show was aired, it attempted (rather clumsily, imo) to put a spotlight on how people can be saying something and not even realize the impact of the words or how it could be perceived as racist. So your comment that Sheldon's mother "doesn't see what she is saying" is indeed true. Her being conservative, religious, and from Texas is wrapped up with the ignorance to play on those stereotypes, using a character who is not actually malicious in an attempt to make it funny. Did you know a new species of jellyfish was called the Bazinga in a tribute to the show and Jim Parsons' character? From Wikipedia (for the sake of brevity): The genus name, Bazinga, has two cultural references: firstly, as a colloquialism meaning "fooled you!" uttered by Dr. Sheldon Cooper in the television program The Big Bang Theory, as the small size means the species was probably mistaken as a juvenile of other species, such as the similar Catostylus mosaicus; the term bazinga is also given to a seven-string harp, and the straight radial canals of this new species are reminiscent of such strings. Please don't stop bouncing around to the theme song! I'm singing it loudly as you do, so it all works out. :p I'm glad my neighbors can't hear....
