Also, has anyone else noticed that the pattern with the three names Metatron gave to Gadreel matches up exactly with Cain’s prediction for Dean? Cain tells Dean he is going to murder Crowley first, then Cas, then finally Sam. An enemy, then a friend, then the one he loves the most. Metatron has Gadreel kill Thaddeus (an enemy), Kevin (a friend/ally at least, someone Gadreel knows well and has been around often, and knows how Sam sees the kid as family), and then finally Abneer, his most loved. I dont know if it was intentional or not, but a really cool piece of foreshadowing

oh I love this episode, but it always makes me sad, to see the end of Jared playing Gadreel, he did such a fantastic job with it! Jared's performance is just phenomenal, and storytelling wise I love how we go almost seamlessly from Sam having a horrible time with with the trials, and then possession, straight into Dean having a horrible time with the mark. Although i do have to say, in the entire series, I think this time period is probably the most brutal display of karma we see all series. Dean needs to see the impact his decisions are having on Sammy. He needs to get a reality check on just how much Sam has suffered, and, honestly, how much he has contributed to that. This part, starting with the Mark of Cain, is I think the breaking point we have been building towards, since season 4. All of Dean's anger, belittling, misunderstanding is coming to a head, and his ignorance in what it means to be controlled, to lose autonomy, to be afraid of something you can't control, needs to be addressed, for both brother's sake. I genuinely believe, in a horrible way, the mark of cain is the best thing for Dean. I think it is what finally gives him the empathy to truly understand what sam was talking about, about being unclean, and infected with darkness like a disease. The mark of Cain is Dean's version of demon blood, and being possessed, all in one. Honestly, i think the only reason we get our boys back to the same kind of relationship that they had in early seasons is because of what happens over the next arc in the story, and it is a crucial to Dean's development and growth as Sam's arc in seasons 4 and 5 were to his. R.I.P to Kevin Tran though. That poor kid is probably the second most cursed character on the show. But as tragic as his death was, I am kinda glad that it was "Sam" who killed him. Sam and Kevin have always been cut from the same cloth in my opinion, both Chosen, both innocent nerds who didn't ask for their fates but were forced into the life by outside forces, targeted and attacked for their special abilities, with their lives ended far too soon. Both deserve better, and while I hate that Sammy has to carry the guilt of killing Kevin, despite it not being his fault at all, I love that, front a story telling perspective, Sam was the first person in our trio that Kevin met, and he was the last one he spoke to (alive at least) as well, as far as Kevin knew. A full circle moment that wrapped up Kevin's story beautifully, in my opinion, if a little brutally and jarring
