If you recall, Cas knocked both Sam and Dean out before leaving with Kelly to help raise the 'baby Jesus'. Had the boys not shown up to help at the end of last season, Cas and Kelly would both be dead and Lucifer would have his son. It makes Cas/Kelly/Jack's belief that Castiel would be able to protect him clearly wrong. Even if Lucifer was tricked into the AU - then the angels show up this episode to steal him. Sam and Dean are the only reason he isn't being used as a weapon for others but it cost them their entire family yet again. Sam is definitely being the softer understanding bro out of the two but Dean is also being the overprotective older bro. Cuteness and naivety doesn't negate the fact that they have a god-level teenager who is going to be tracked, attacked, kidnapped and risk both of them non-stop so Dean is mainly thinking that the last family (Sam) is in danger. He won't get attached for multiple reasons I understand. It really just removes ALL character growth for the main cast. Dean is hated, Cas is stupid, Sam is 'I used to be misunderstood too', angels/demons are power hungry dicks who hate humans and everyone wants the half human Jack for "reasons..."
