I forgot to scream about this but that line about dean being a fan of erotic anime is actually continuity from season 7! He's such a nerd i love him, he's always been a nerd but he feels the need to hide it & point the finger at Sam less and less with time 🥰

One of my favorite episodes of the season!

I would love an entire show of Max and Alicia! Casting spells, seducing men, the family business 👏 can you imagine the power? Hunter witches! Love it, love this episode, we really see a shift in the show starting season 12, more diversity, more sense of community, more good magic, more strong complex women getting more focus & it's all because we got new people in the writing team that aren't all straight white men, that's definitely one thing i appreciate about the later seasons, Steve yockey and Davy perez did a good job writing this episode, can't wait for you to get to see some episodes this season coz it has bangers

I love this comment! I totally agree.

Dean was born January 79, Sam in May 83 :)

Very nice analysis.

In my headcannon, I imagine that some of the fighting between John and Mary was about these trips. Because I just can't imagine this is the only hunting that she has done since they were married. Like she would say she had to go to a funeral for a second cousin once removed or something. And her excuses for time away and skittish behavior around things would be one of the issues in their marriage. Though I have imagined other issues between them.

I equate Mary to Dean rather than Sam because of what we see in this episode. Because truthfully all three talk about wanting to leave hunting at different points. But it's what brings them back to hunting time and again that differs. For Sam, it's family and destiny. For Dean and Mary, it's duty. They feel its their duty to hunt. Mary is saying here that she is retiring in 1980. But not only has Dean been alive for 1-2 years, her family has been dead for ~7 years. Which means for 7 years she has been "retiring" considering that she was determined to stop before her parents' deaths. It's proof that she is not driven to hunt because of her family. She says to Asa that she had to tie up some loose ends. Meaning she is putting the responsibility on herself much like Dean would. For Sam, we have seen that he is capable of stopping hunting completely as long as he is away from his family...for years even. And Sam, himself, always frames his acceptance of hunting as it being in his blood or what his family does. With regards to Sam's feelings about Mary, I think it comes down to being insecure in his relationship with her. He doesn't know how to have a mother. He doesn't know how to have a relationship with Mary. He doesn't know how she feels about him. He doesn't know if he deserves one. Even Mary being back was a gift for Dean, not Sam. He is terrified to do anything to start their relationship off wrong. So, he is always trying to be understanding and comforting. Then there is most likely all his old buried fears surrounding the past. Him worried that she might think he is evil for having the demon blood. That she might blame him for how she died. The crazy religious mom from a few episodes ago was this worst fear realized. Even though he knows that mom was wrong to think those things (and conversely so would Mary), he still fears it. Because he is afraid of her rejection. That even given this second chance, he will still never have a relationship with her. Whereas Dean has accepted her rejection. He believes she is gone because he is a disappointment. That she hates his life much like Asa's mom hated his. Asa's mom freaking out on Mary is likely how she feels about herself. She feels that her deal is the reason the boys have no life outside hunting. Even though without her deal, the boys would not exist. Mirroring the argument she makes to Asa's mom, that without her, Asa would have died. But his mom's emotions and grief don't care about the logic of that. And Mary is the same. Not seeing the logic through her grief over the life she dreamed of for her family. Basically, all three of them are a war with the logic of their situations vs their emotions in the situations. One of these days I will stop writing long comments at 3am....

I did forget to mention, I know Mary said she was trying to finish out a few open hunts. Dean was born in January, and not sure what month it was in the episode. Dean is 1-2 years old. So how Mary got away to go finish this hunt without John knowing what she was doing...would be interesting to know.

Hey Shelley! I knew you’d like this episode, or at least aspects of it: a hunter hangout, Mary background and Jody and Mary meeting! I think Jody is like an aunt to the boys more than a straight up mom figure. I really like this episode for the same reasons as above. I also love Sam and Mary talking and getting a bit closer. I love how understanding Sam is, but I also think a part of him is afraid not to be "okay" with her choice, if that makes sense. I think he is afraid to rock the boat, so to speak. I think Sam and Mary being the ones to see the blood drip on Asa's forehead and look up at the body on the ceiling is interesting, as it gives me pilot episode vibes. I also love the Dean and Jody talk, and how he actually listened to her a bit. Also, it was so fun seeing other hunters meet the boys in person. I wish we got to hear a longer story about Sam and/or Dean from another hunter's perspective in this episode. I think that could be really cool, though what we did get was fun. This episode has a nice mix of characters and I just really enjoy it.

The witch twins were really cool and the surprise to find out they are Asa’s kids! It was nice for Asa’s mom to now have grandkids to care about, as she had seemed so lost and bitter otherwise.

such good interpersonal moments in this episode! love the twins, love jodie and dean talking, love more insight into mary, love seeing billie again, loved the moments of comedy. probably in my top 5 season 12 episodes. any glimpse we get of the wider hunter world makes me happy.

Love this episode. From the intro Jodie and Dean talking about killing Hitler. I love the hunter gathering and the twins and then the Mary/Jodie interaction was fun too. The fact that they're both legendary among hunters is kind of how it should be and I like it.
