It's been a while, but The Race F1 Podcast is back open for business - and by 'business', we mean it's time to take more questions from all of you!
Get your questions in either ahead of the race or as soon as you can after the finish, as the timezone means Edd and the team will be recording as swiftly as they can on Sunday night!
As the word happenstance is now a permanent fixture of the podcast when should we introduce Verstappenstance?

I personally don’t think the safety car call was late. Hamilton wasn’t remotely in danger even when the safety car was called out almost a sector before his stricken car.
If the safety car is called purely on safety grounds, there was nothing unsafe about it until the 3rd sector.

Can we see a video mashup of all turn 1 incidents where one of the drivers went off track during a passing attempt, indicate which ones got penalties, and assess how consistent the stewards were during the race?

Given Ferraris recent performances I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished 2nd in the constructors and Red Bull 3rd. If that was to happen, when was the last time a driver won the drivers championship with their team finishing 3rd in the constructors. Also, if this happens would it showcase Verstappens excellence or just how poor/inconsistent Perez has been?

It feels like there is no clean way to race Max Verstappen (when competing for a championship). He's not a dirty driver but he'll race to the letter of the law in attack. When someone races him like he does, it usually results in a crash, penalty or Verstappen saying ahead. He's very good at it but it does seem to be anti-wheel to wheel racing.

Is it me or are the FIA not having a good season? Inconsistency with the stewarding and another late safety car call, they just seem indecisive.

I understand the overtaking off track rule and gaining an advantage is cause for a penalty, but why is defending off track not treated the same way?
Both drivers left the track, Norris having to avoid verstappen so, to me, whatever happens once they’ve both left the track is the same “advantage”, and thus unworthy of penalty. I’m not even a Norris fan or a verstappen hater, I just want common sense to prevail

Whilst the regulations for overtaking on the outside seem reasonable, this race shows that overtaking on the inside needs a review.
If the outside car is ahead into/end of breaking zone but inside car is ahead by apex, the inside car should have to keep within track limits for it to count as a "clean" overtake otherwise it is risk free and puts all the potential kick back on the car outside them
This should prevent cars dive bombing onto the apex with no chance of keeping it on the track from forcing opponents wide to either receive a penalty or force them to slam on the breaks, If you were never going to make the turn how can it be a legal overtake?
William Seymour

Once again, track limits. Just heard Ant Davidson’s analysis of the Verstappen / Norris ‘incident’, and have to agree with his analysis: Norris wasn’t in front at the apex. The regulations need revisiting to stop drivers braking so late that they are in front at the apex but can’t make the corner. Also, gravel traps or other hazard that is natural and punitive would make drivers rethink their defensive strategies. Masterclasses of defensive driving didn’t rely on the type of driving seen today (the most obvious example is Spain 1981) whereas the only similar example that I can think of was Austria 2016 (I think) when Rosberg forced Hamilton off and was penalised (I may have got this completely wrong and confused this when Rosberg and Hamilton clashed)

Why are the rules not changed to ‘if you stay on the inside and run wide then blame the other driver it’s your corner’? I can’t see how Max constantly gets away with this you cannot have your cake and eat it

Regardless of whether Norris is in a championship fight, should he be in a championship fight?
Adam Barton
2024-10-20 20:46:52 +0000 UTC
Should Verstappen be penalised for forcing a car off track? Surely either both Norris and Verstappen should be penalised or neither of them? Is there not a case that both Norris overtook off track and Verstapoen forced a car off track, if so which penalty is prioritised? The rules need to be revised so that they don't incentivise divebombing in attack or when defending the inside so much.
Adam Barton

These rules of engagement the FIA have need to go can they not be changed to something like don't force another driver off the track ?, max is using the rules so nothing against him.

Lando stress me out… did not cover the first corner and then screwed up the overtake on Max… in layman terms he doesn’t seem to have “it”… is it a mental thing or a flaw in how he drives?

What were the stewards doing up in race control? It genuinely seems the flip of a coin as to whether it was "gaining an advantage" or "fair racing". Even when a driver is entitled to racing room but gets crowded to the shadow realm, that's a penalty. But other times it's not. And while we're at it, how did max not get a penalty for forcing a driver off the track at L1T1?

What were McLaren's pit wall thinking when not advising Lando to give the spot back to Max? Norris had plenty of time to re-overtake him. It appears to be a clear-cut penalty to everyone but McLaren. At best it looks like incompetence; at worse, it reeks of desperation.
Michael Holden
2024-10-20 20:42:59 +0000 UTC
How do we get past this terrible rule of ‘ahead at the apex’? Max just makes sure he’s on the inside, breaks so deep that he makes sure he’s ahead at the apex, then doesn’t care if he stays on track or not - as long as the other driver is off the track on the outside, they can’t overtake. It’s a really poor rule and Verstappen uses it all the time when defending.

Whoops. Only got to see the last few laps (being 6am in Australia) and curious about Colapinto destroying Albon and Lawson the same on Tsunoda.

Given other drivers were penalised for forcing drivers off the track and track limits penalties for Norris, was Verstappen lucky not to be penalised on Lap 1 incidents with Norris/Sainz, worth noting he also went off track in the Norris incident and yet somehow didn't get any warnings

Has Singapore/Austin just been a couple of weaker tracks for Piastri, he has been pretty anonymous both weekends and not as close to Norris as we have been used to this season.
As competitive as Fernando Alonso is, how frustrated will he be with Aston's very poor race pace, their season is in real danger of fizzling out.

(Further on Alonso v. Lawson: broadcasting Alonso's radio seemed a bit pointed, even accounting for drumming up drama/spiciness in race coverage.)

I'm proposing a free agent re-do...I was thinking, the driver who played the market perfectly was Hulk, who snagged that seat early. If you put him and that seat back on the market today, would that seem like an exciting signing, or might he be sitting there like Valtteri? If nothing else, the team would be in more of a negotiating position. And who knows if Williams might prefer Franco rather than pay up for a couple years of Carlos? Or to make this discussion spicier, you could set the rules back to first of the year, pre-Lewis-to-Ferrari, and debate the relative knock-on effects, Lewis/Kimi/Ollie. As an American, I'm struck by the F1 labor market - in US leagues you can’t tamper with anyone under contract. And then the free agents all become free after the season so it’s much more orderly, both for the players as well as the teams. F1 is less controlled. So let's have a silly season re-do discussion in October!

Any F1 seat is a massive prize but is there not a degree of concern for sending a driver as talented as Ollie Bearman to Haas which even with the new Toyota support is basically in last place for resourcing?

As an American I’ve always loved COTA because it’s a real race track with a great environment and quality racing. Do you think this event has lost any of its status since Miami and Las Vegas were added to the calendar? I find those races to be gimmicky and Austin to be underrated because of it.

Sent pre-race, so this question may age poorly:
With the weekend as whole (both Haas qualifying high for the sprint, Alonso v. Lawson, Mercedes' ...spectacular quali, the underlying tension in the wake of Daniel Riccardo's dismissal, etc.) feeling like a very interesting demarcation of the season, given the state of events this season, what is the impact of the results of this race for the teams leading into the last segments of the season?
(Bonus: how can the fans prepare for the upcoming roller coaster of emotions? It's been rough as a Williams fan this year. 🤣)

In the Finnish broadcast it has been mentioned that the reason why Perez has not been sacked is that Horner has a role in his management. I haven't heard this managerial role mentioned on The Race so I'm wondering if the claim is true at all?

Similar to the other members who have posted their questions well in advance, this might become redundant ...
Where exactly is Mercedes right now? Of all the leading teams on the Grid, are they struggling the most in understanding/working with the nuances of their car? Is there 'light at the end of the tunnel' for them?

What's your take on the Alonso vs. Lawson drama?
It feels like we have gotten some rather enjoyable sprints this season, is the format proving to work a bit better now or do sprints simply benefit from the fact that the whole season has been super competitive anyway?
Also in regards to sprints, you have brought up a few times that there isn't really anything to drive for for much of the lower midfield. What is a (points-)system that you guys think could fix that issue?
Colapinto made some comments to the media this weekend that could be seen as homophobic. Did you find them problematic as well or was it more of a translation issue or just a young guy not choosing his words wisely?

Sending this before the race, so maybe the question looks dumb later tonight but: Do sprint and qualifying hint at (even more) genuine progress for Haas, and do they now look strong favourites to beat RB to sixth in the constructors? Or did they benefit from any track specifics or circumstances which could lead to a different picture in a week's time?

Do Mercedes know what the source of their performance variability / tyre variability is with temperature? It appears that they have managed to expand their set up window to get the car to work but the temperature changing seems to completely throw them.
