Early access: BBV10s S10 E4 - Boutsen's no-stop masterpiece at Hungary '90

Only one of Thierry Boutsen's three F1 wins came in dry conditions, but it was a famous victory, as he held off the field for the entire 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix, going as slowly as he could out front to make his tyres last the distance without requiring a pitstop.

Edd Straw and Andrew van de Burgt join Glenn Freeman to look back on Boutsen's masterclass, and the chaos that went on behind him, including two collisions that involved McLaren drivers punting people off at the Hungaroring's tricky chicane. Plus, we dissect Ayrton Senna's race, as he came back from a puncture to miss out on victory to his good friend by 0.2 seconds.

As always we work our way through the other big topics in F1 at the time, including Nigel Mansell's supposed retirement, Williams trying to sign Senna, Benetton laying the foundations for its mid-1990s title success, the decline of Lotus, and Eddie Jordan getting very upset with the politics of F1 before his team had even joined the grid.

Prost would have been happy about this arrangement I'm sure. This coming from a huge Alain Prost fan

Yeah, as we said on the show, there wasn't much to choose between them. People who know Frank Williams well say that Patrese was always good at charming him, especially in contract negotiations, so maybe that's why Riccardo got the nod. (Glenn)

The Race

Yeah it's strange how quickly it all fell away for him, and clearly he was a bit unlucky to end up in teams that were going through rough patches. Although Frank Dernie always says Prost was a lot quicker in his Ligier tests than Boutsen ever was! If we'd ended up with that Prost-Boutsen line-up, it would have been very one-sided. (Glenn)

The Race

Boutsen seemed to fall away very quickly post Williams. Ligier on paper was a good choice as was Jordan the year after. In the What If universe Ligier could have had a Prost Boutsen line up in 1992.

Was a Boutsen fan in his Arrows and Benetton days, couldn't believe he was let go in place of Patrese. Maybe as Ed says he was a bit dull, but it is harsh on him

That sounds very similar to the scripting process 🤔

Does anyone else find that there's so much content in each of these episodes that you have to listen to it 3-4 times to digest everything?
