PATREON VIDEO UPDATE: Reflecting on 2024, looking ahead to 2025

Hey folks, threw together a reflection video for the end of the year. To preface, the "editing" here is minimal to say the least, so this could be a good one to listen to while you're doing chores, going for a walk, or playing Bubble Bobble.

In this video, I talk about each of my videos from 2024 (as well as one that's yet to be released), what I've learned & how I feel about them, as well as a general discussion for what I'd like to do in 2025.

I feel energized and excited for the opportunities that a new year will bring, so I hope you continue to stick around to see what's in store. I also hope you had a great Christmas, some nice relaxing holidays, and that you've got a happy new year ahead of you!

Really looking forward to this year and I’m glad I can help fund it in a small way. Your work is more than just entertaining - it’s important. I love that you can dig up some of the history and context around the games you cover as well as engage and review them as a player. It’s a very entertaining act of game preservation. I think your Saturn and 3DO videos are your best work but I also appreciate the Ultma series even though they don’t interest me as much. Keep working on what interests you the most!

SiemsMachine

I'm always thinking of that during editing lol One epic funny extremely loud moment is not worth the permanent mistrust it would cultivate.

Majuular

I just wanted to say I really appreciate the audio balancing on your videos. I tend to watch long form video game deep dives before I sleep and start by watching which eventually leads to drifting off. Some creators throw in super loud game audio in the middle of their vids which wakes me right up lol

Just joined up after way too long and I wanted to say I'm LOVING the Ultima video series. When I was a kid, I had a collection of all of the games from Akalabeth - Ultima VIII on my dad's PC. I was a JRPG kid so I could never quite wrap my head around Ultima, but I played around with all of them anyway, because the same thing that made them somewhat impenetrable for me made them fascinating, too. For some reason VI was the one I spent the most time with, couldn't tell you why. The video series is really bringing back that fascination. Ultima Underworld has certainly been added to my "play soon" list.

I discovered your channel around the time I got into game collecting a little over a year ago. I grew up during the PlayStation 2/Xbox 360 era of games, so I honestly had pretty narrow range when it came to taste. Your channel continues to introduce me to new media and challenge my perception of what a “good game” actually is and your series on Ultima is no exception. Thanks to you, I felt inspired to import a white Sega Saturn, and it has been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I’ve been playing through Baroque and having the time of my life. I will always be ride or die for whatever you put out there in the world. Keep up the fabulous work. P.S. I hope to see you cover Ōkami someday.

+1 on this, would love some deep dives on both these series!

I'm so glad you stuck with the Ultima series. I missed out on the Series as a slightly too young console kid, but really appreciate getting to know it now through your videos.

David John

Cheers pal, glad to have you involved with the channel. To think it was all because you decided to draw Spheal smoking a cigarette that fateful day...

We're reaching "Aw Shucks" levels never before seen! I thank you for those kind words! Your work is a constant motivator for me to improve, because you never stop trying to get better! I want to get better in turn, and I can feel that 2025 is going to be a real Grand Slam of a year!

FenrirLives

I'm a bit late, but it has definitely been a fun ride. I found your channel around the Ultima 4 video, and you have introduced me to a lot of games that I hope to be able to play at some point, some I never even really considered before like Ultima. I wish you luck in the next year and years after that.

Kelly Culham-Erickson

Ohhh looking forward to ultima underworld. That sounds awesome. You’re my favourite channel i found this year. Looking forward to new stuff both ultima and otherwise and hope next year is as good as this one

sarah

Thanks a million, Ultima videos will continue until the bitter end... and it do be bitter. The algorithm will never get the better of me.

Majuular

Thanks for the update, Maj! I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Ultima videos [I enjoyed your other videos too]. Don't let the algo grind you down.

Thank you Parallax, it means a lot to hear it. I went thru a rough patch a couple years ago and had a few comfort channels I relied on myself. I am both pleased and somewhat in a state of disbelief that I can help out in a similar way for others. Anxiety is a real bitch, keep making progress, take it one day at a time and you will someday be shocked at how far you've come.

Majuular

Hey Maj. I just wanted to thank you for the awesome content this year. I've mentioned it before but I was dealing with some pretty severe anxiety earlier this year. I randomly found your channel right before this began (the rare time when YouTube randomly recommended me something good) and on the days where things were so bad that I couldn't work, I would sit on the couch and binge your whole channel. I love deep discussions of historically important games and your hardcore analysis, plus all the history you provided along with your chill presentation really provided my brain comfort food when I needed it. It was a great help in a hard time. My anxiety's not gone, but it's much better managed now happily but I still just about drop everything I'm doing when I see a new video drop. I've also had a chance to spend time in your Discord community, which has been a nice find as well. There's a ton of great people there and Jess is always a pleasure to chat with. That you both showed up and hung out on my buddy's charity stream and donated as well really meant a lot. You attract good people around your orbit and that's something to be proud of as a content creator. I've made content on YouTube and Twitch for many years that has not drawn any significant crowd, but I'm thinking of what to do with both and have some ideas. I hope to bring back streams soon and if I do, they'll be retro focused as well and not just me playing the games but hopefully, able to spread some interesting history as well, which is something you got me interested in doing. I will say this: Don't ever lose the desire to dig for those little details like you talked about. There are so many popular "history" channels on YouTube that just regurgugate Wikipedia and Reddit threads, many of which have straight up incorrect facts in them. That single photo it took you days to find can often have incredible value, far beyond what it seems in the moment. It's always important to keep that in mind. I hope you and everyone else has a great 2025. Can't wait for the Ultima Underworld and especially, the Ultima VII videos!

Parallax Abstraction

Clearly you need to do videos on the other two big 3 RPG series Might and Magic and Wizardry. I'm joking mostly, but I do have a fondness for Might and Magic. They are much lighter games than Ultima aside from maybe the first two games.

FrootyLoopsSamurai

Thanks for the honest feedback Zetta, I appreciate where you're coming from. Also appreciate you sticking around in spite of it all. Also, I believe the tune you're talking about is the song "Souls of Mist" from Demon's Souls. Otherwise it's the Holy Forest tune from King's Field 4.

Majuular

Can’t wait to see what 2025 brings. Your Kings Field and xenogears videos introduced me to your content. Been hooked since. Absolutely loved the Ultima videos. They made me purchase the games and play for myself. Thank you for everything! And I’m proud to help support your endeavors!

Looking forward to 2025 with your videos they definitely help with the everyday grind keep up the amazing work brother and happey holidays to you and your family

Sirfortune

I am just happy you’re enjoying making things. The Ultima retrospective is massively appreciated from an old fan. Hell your series is ten times better than the one spoony put out. Happy to be a supporter through this year and happy to continue into the next. Thanks for the good times.

Pantless Warrior

Keep following your gut! Looking forward to 2025 and beyond.

In The Navy

I don't give a shit about Ultima, but have loved the content this year. As someone who grew up a JRPG console kid, I've really enjoyed vicariously experiencing this series through your videos. Ultima is one of those massively influential if-I-ever-get-around-to's that - if I'm being honest with myself - I know I'll never actually get around to. As such, your studious (but somehow very fun) analysis has been greatly appreciated. Not to say that you should focus on the series exclusively, though. At this point the videos I most want to see from you are whatever the hell you want to make most. Thanks for all the great content, keep killing it in 2025, guy.

RAN

First off what is that gorgeous melody at the 25min mark that takes me back to a comfy place. As someone who has been watching and following since a few months after the Xenogears release, I am both extremely happy where you're taking the channel and your approach to the newer content, but I've also been slightly dejected at the lack of variety in 2024. I'm not an Ultima fan and at this point never will be, so it has been a bit unfortunate that when a new video does release it's mostly been on the next Ultima instalment. For me as a non-Ultima appreciator, it has made this year feel a big stagnant in terms of Maj content. That's no diss on your improved quality of production, exposition, research and hell the whole package, it is strictly content-related. That said I'm looking forward to what 2025 brings with the room for a cuppa tea in-between each new Ultima retrospective and heck maybe I'll even become enthralled enough by one to try it out. And even though I don't like Ultima, I will always be a person of lordly caliber just based on my respect for your work (And you have my heart with the SH retro's which are my favourite long-form videos of all time). Keep doing what you're doing Marmite-Man!

Zetta

While I'm a big Breath of Fire 3 fan as it got me into videogames and was one of the games that got me to learn English at a young age, please ignore everyone commenting that. Because this history of Ultima, and kind of gaming in general, is fascinating. Seriously, though. Keep up the good work. You and Dungeon Chill have made vids on games I never played but couldn't help but watch all the way through because I love the vibes you give off and the effort you put in.

Risax the Imp

I thought that the Sierra tangent made sense since you’d go on to talk about three of their games in the FMV horror video, lmao. I liked it and had no problem with it, helps put it in perspective what was going on back then Also, I happen to love Ultima and I’ve been wanting someone to make videos like this for a long time— and here we are!

Malek Douglas

my 2024 reflection is that I'm still really glad I found your Legend of Dragoon video like 2 years ago 🥲 onward to 2025!

FWIW I really enjoyed the Sierra tangent
