Interesting take! I do agree the system needs scaling back. It's interesting how most people bring up the US as an example of a republic, when there are so many more countries that are republics, like Finland. To be fair, my qualm with the monarchy is mostly due to the fact they are exempt from certain laws. Fix that, and I'd probably be a bit more indifferent.

Recently joined so this is a very late comment, but found this very interesting! My thoughts, the Monarchy is a ridiculous institution, but I wouldn’t actually want to get rid of it! In a Presidential system, I feel like the President is not just in charge of running the country, but is also seen as a symbol of what the country represents. From speaking to American friends, I know that this can be really tough when you have a President who you don’t like. I mean, UK politics is screwed, but I think having a head of state independent of the government kind of helps detach ourselves from having the same feelings as having a President (if only Psychologically). But yeah, the whole institution needs MASSIVE scaling back and reform if it is to survive (not just the Royal family though, that’s really the tip of the iceberg).

Thank you! I knew about the inheritance tax, but not the rest! Thanks for the information! Yes, it seems the "work" they do is just to be the face of the monarchy at events, openings, etc. I'd love for Charles to do an actual office job for a day and see how he gets on!

Great reaction, and I mostly agree with you. The £89 million you quoted that the tax payer funds to them falls short of the real amount. When security at other events, expenses, etc are taken into account, the estimated figure is £345 million. And then there's the corruption. Shopping Bags of cash, cash for honours, named in the Panama and Paradise papers. He lobbies to be exempt from laws, as new bills are passed, he signs off on them, but gets to vet them first, and refuses to sign any that will effect him, until they are amended. One such law exempted him from inheritance tax. How much would he have owed had he paid tax on the wealth he inherited from his mother? And what work do they actually do? We hear how hard working they are, but really? Cutting ribbons and eating posh lunches with the rich and famous, that WE have to pay for, while there are homeless people all around. Nurses work hard. Doctors work hard. Shelf stackers in Tescos work hard. McDonalds workers, and factory workers work hard. Lorry drivers, and builders work hard. They are unelected, undemocratic, corrupt, over-paid, and work shy.
