This installation is a creation by Roni Lugassi, Inga Schmidt, Tünde Szakos and Kim Kong in collaboration with mental health patients.
The installation takes over an entire room within the nightclub Wilde Renate and reimagines it as a bedroom during lock down. The space also contains a number of framed photographs, paintings and video art. Its both evocative and contemplative, a relatable space for many people in the world who have spent the last few months in incomparable isolation.
Nevertheless its a very fun experience to visit! The room is inhabited by all manner of strange creatures, puppets, human cats & passive agressive housemates. If you search carefully, you can also find a hidden room through a low cupboard, or a tunnel in the back of the closet.
The artist's statement is as follows.
Locked in, Lights on aims to explore the darknesses within us, through the various perspectives that make our individual experiences unique. By shining light through lenses or brushes we delve into negative feelings, to appreciate the fascination and intense humanity in these moments. A visual variety of differently interpretable situations and media, the viewer is free to relate in their way. The bedroom, where an infinite number of things can happen or not happen, and an infinite number of thoughts can exist or not exist, physical and mental states constantly fluctuate for any given individual. Often feelings are masked by others, depression brings shame, sexual frustration brings anger brings guilt. We aim to show that all of these feelings, no matter which came before the other, or for what reason they arrived, are valid and are not as dark if opened to discussion.
