Show notes 201

Hello again. We start this week, since he gets a mention in this podcast, with a picture of William Woollard adopting his signature stance followed by a picture of the crazy Austin A35 monster truck in Richard’s neighbourhood and finally some shots of the ridiculous Balloonfest ’86 mentioned at the end of the show. Now, some links…

Sad news; it seems Toyota’s Megaweb in Tokyo closed in 2021

DJ Khalid being useless, as usual

Richard’s gloomy evo column about cars he’ll never own

That Balloonfest disaster

A more pragmatic look at Balloonfest (spoiler alert; the balloons didn’t really kill two people) [that’s enough about balloons, cheers - everyone]

more likely to be an SJ10/Samurai too early for a Vitara i think.

The Century was roped off when I visited :(

Sure! Daikanyama T-site has an amazing bookstore with a great automotive section and there are often weekend mini meets there. I also recommend Mooneyes in Yokohama for weird SoCal/JDM crossover. The Nissan museum in Zama is great - you need to make an appt to get in, but everything’s in there. Nismo is also designed to be a mini-museum. Daikoku on Sunday morning is the can’t miss event though. Have a great trip and happy birthday!

Brendan McAleer

I may take this as a 'challenge accepted'... I'm visiting there as part of a 50th birthday holiday from my beloved wife. Just been eyeing up the Fuji Mo'sport museum too... I have the days in/near Tokyo, the days in Nikko, and the days in Kyoto. We're going to just do the Daikoku car meet, literally their the five on it. Any other suggestions?

Foxy

Sigh. Went to that too. It was pretty good. They had everything from F1 cars to a Honda S600 which was even smaller than I was expecting. So sad, was going back in May and fully intending to go to do Megaweb and the museum again.

Mark Heeler

Went there in 2015. Funnily enough I was most impressed by the Century. First time I saw one or had the pleasure of sitting in one. Blue velour everywhere.

Mark Heeler

What's underneath the A35? It's on an E-plate, and DVLA says Suzuki , so maybe a Vitara? One of those overly wide ones beloved of Balearic car hire companies.

Also the new(ish) Fuji motorsports museum: https://fuji-motorsports-museum.jp/en/

Megaweb and the Toyota showroom in Venus Fort were excellent. They had a great selection of exhibits from both Toyota and others. It’s hugely missed, but Toyota does have another great museum in Nagoya which is worth visiting.

Bernard O'Connor

There used to be quite a nice small motor museum in the big Venus Fort shopping centre which was next to Megaweb on Odaiba, but I see Venus Fort closed last year.

Mark Anderson

Megaweb may be toast, but Honda has *just* re-opened its Collection Hall in Motegi. How could you possibly beat Woollarding in front of an NSX R in Senna-style loafers and white socks?

Brendan McAleer

Is an endowment policy what you get after one undergoes gentleman’s surgery?

Gabriel Grist-Parker

I always promised myself a TVR Chimera when my endowment policy matured at age 43… unfortunately covid and a certain Mr Putins tyrannous ideas meant it didn’t quite achieve its predicted goal, and after I repaid a loan with it there wasn’t much left 🤣

Adam

Oop's!

I see an unneeded apostrophe!! LOL
