Show notes 190

Hello again. What do we have in the show notes this week, you might ask? Well, we start with some pics of Keith Moon and his hovercraft, obviously. Then we have Ayrton Senna with a Tamiya car and a Cortina (and possible his Merc SEC behind) and a picture of the Ayrton Senna Road sign in Reading. Finally, we have an example of an engine taller than a car, a listener’s sweet, sweet pair of Omegas that distracted Jonny, the nice-looking but almost certainly crap mk1 XR2 that Jonny saw at ock-shun (it sold for £15,975!) and a top model shows off one of our new hats. Now some linkages…

@Smith or Sniff, if you’re ever in Toronto, I have a PT Cruiser convertible for you to have a go in. It’s been in my family since new, and became mine last summer. It’s exactly as underwhelming as you’d think a four speed automatic, “low pressure” turbo, mid-nought DaimlerChrysler product would be. Having said that, it’ll never leave my ownership.

Funnily enough, I have had one on loan for a week. It’s a hatchback.

That SEC in the background is Senna’s car. Been bugging me for weeks after seeing this photo! https://www.instagram.com/p/BfI5nUCjOmH/?igsh=MTU0OHdnMXQ4dDE1OQ==

Sennas car was the Black 500SEC running on steels with dustbin lids, really well documented car that still exists was featured in I think Classic Cars a few years ago

How about a Polestar 2 for best looking current saloon? If we're allowing EVs?

Cortina GLS! S-pack was pretty rare.

Thinking about the XR2, my mate Clark has one exactly the same and same condition (that he bought for £150 about 15 years ago and then built himself) and it’s exactly right about the folk that chat to him about it. We were at a car meet in a retail park car park a few years ago and some guy and his son in a bright red 458 reversed back just to show his young son it. We were also at a Ford show in Aberdeen where there were two Sierra RS500s (both in black and one of which had been trailered from Shetland) but Clark’s XR was the only one there. It’s an Everyman car much more than the sierra!

Agree with the comments about the Alfa Guilia - but don’t shout too much, I’m planning to get one next year and don’t want everyone driving up prices!

When manufacturers started adding this (and similar, like when the car was unlocked), there was also apparently a corresponding (small) increase in engine damage from those that had misfuelled their diesel with petrol but had slightly less time to realise their mistake...

On the topic of hidden Porsche heated wheels, I had an old used first-gen cayenne (amazing car for Scottish highlands life) which I realised only after months had a heated wheel. But there’s no buttons! It heats up only on certain interior/exterior temps. I thought it was the most German thing ever that THEY know best when you need a heated wheel- your opinion not necessary!! Weirdly, it also had two buttons hidden behind the wheel- but both only turned off the lights on the wheel buttons. Bizarre

Funny you post that photo of Senna with his Tamiya RC. I watched a great documentary by Francis Megahy posted onto youtube (https://youtu.be/Mb46pGM0uiE?si=wGennN37cailRzzX) in which Senna talks about his love for RC, and in particular RC airplanes which he flew regularly at his fazenda. In the video he mentions the Honda F1 team building him a few RC planes over the years, one of which has an uber cool Marlboro paint scheme on it.

I was told that that to cut the time waiting for the glow plug light to go out and allowing the car to start (and UK customers not used to diesels cars) manufacturers added a system to preheat the glow plugs as you opened the door so you could pretty much start the car straight away. Seemed to be true in my 90s A6 2.5TDI and I remember being caught out when given various older sh**ter diesel "courtesy" cars .

Do you always set your Auto Trader search postcode to the Longbridge Plant, Richard? 😂

My brother lives on the road that Senna lived in when he lived in Norwich, Rugge Drive, they have built some new houses nearby and named them Senna Mews in his honour
