Podcast 165 - Oh look, it's Mika Hakkinen

Jonny has spotted a famous racing driver (while having lunch with another very famous person that he won’t mention).

Also in this episode, believing Stirling Moss is still with us, Salman Rushdie’s Midnight Club and bongo mag stash, a Honda Beat for sale, cars you want someone else to own, Larry David leisure shoes, pretending BMW M cars look nice, the problem with the Peugeot 408, winding up Elton John, Shaun the Sheep’s heavy trance farmer, opinions on replica Ferraris, an amazingly airbrushed Citroen C6, Steve Coogan making a mess of an R34 Skyline, and Richard is having car trouble on two fronts.

Comments

The main thing that bothers me about Ferrari replicas is that so many lovely 406 coupes were chopped up to make them. I'd like to do a reversy percy one: 406 coupe body transplanted onto a 360 or 430 chassis and drivetrain

Matthew Carpenter

The chaos he subjects his town to in the latest installment is also driven by a need to pay off mounting bills

I always felt that the whole thing was going on in Wallace's head hence why up until "A Close Shave" we don't see or hear any other humans.

Andy Pinchock

Jonny, Wallace was often struggling for money -the whole plot of the wrong trousers and referenced a few times! Perhaps vice needs a back burner whilst that gets a rewatch ;)

I think Iveco was hived off by Fiat group a few years back, and therefore isn't part of Stelantis. It has a very confusing history of mergers and takeovers which included Ford's medium and heavy commercial business in Europe, Pegasus who were the parent owners of Seddon Atkinson and other concerns. It also formed the short-lived Irisbus to pool efforts with Renault's commercial division on PSV adaptations.

The newest Mazda 5(?) Minivan is super busy on the side, a bodymans nightmare.

My favorite smut mag / illicit booze as safe house as a kid (under 21) was the lower vent doors on my 1964 forrrrrrd f100 truck. The little doors latch and there's a huge space inside. My Kia Soul EV is up to 110 recorded range.

Harry’s ‘all night’ Garage did a piss-take video about an MGB GT LE a few years back, sure that had an MX5 engine on throttle bodies, looked like the perfect combination and sounded really nice.

auto volume control was one of the lovely features that worked in Alf 166 Bought it for the Busso V6 alone. Bonus elements are best interior of any car (until escalating to Quattroporte) , auto dimming + dipping rearview mirror. Less useful - central locking that shut me out while visiting Lloyds bank cash machine. The engine still running - < Italian car foible >

Rob Stannard

I'm gonna say that a choice between King Tut and King Richard the Third to sound less like a shit isn't, in fact, much of a choice.

Purely for fact checking purposes, I have just watched the Shaun the Sheep episode entitled 'Troublesome Tractor" and can confirm no trance was heard. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0084cpn/shaun-the-sheep-series-1-25-troublesome-tractor However given that was in Series 1 and there about 100 more episiodes over the next 5 series I guess maybe the farmer got a stereo fitted (or Shaun did it) at some point.

I live in Bishop's Stortford, metres from the London to Cambridge railway line and a couple of miles from the not enough lanes M11, slap in the middle of the 'M11 Corridor' which apparently has been identified by the British government as a key location for economic and population growth. I bought a new Pioneer head unit with DAB+ to replace the rubbish standard unit in my new to me Abarth 595. I found zero DAB channels of any kind. I spent ages troubleshooting the aerial installation I'd done to no avail. A couple of weeks later I found myself in a car park in Tottenham and tried to scan for DAB, I instantly got 1,000,000 channels, set up presets etc and was delighted. As I arrived home of course I got complete silence. Thanks whoever broadcasts DAB.

The talk about loud tractor radios reminded me of something I've been thinking about for a while. Which car stereo systems have automatic volume compensation and which ones actually work? My Discovery 2 had this and it was bloody effective, but my Tesla Model 3 didn't. It really needed it, as it still had wind and road noise at different speeds so I was constantly turning the volume up and down. The Bose system in my MX-5 claims to have it but I can't notice it working.
