Podcast 144 - A car made by Robins
Added 2023-01-29 18:00:02 +0000 UTCThis week Jonny and Richard are impressed by the Wells Vertige, apart from one thing. Also in this episode, cars that handle well but look like plop, replacing love with gloves in lyrics, what happens when you buy a Golf R, respect for Sweden’s greatest pop star, airbrushed T-shirts in shopping malls, falling asleep leaning on a generator lorry, an unexpected pint of lager, Gordon Murray’s Alfaholics Junior Zagato, bargain Aldi floormats from a surprising maker, more on moonlighting WRC drivers, Smith and Sniff’s influence reaching the adult video industry, a brief appearance from Brian the cat, visibly checking out people’s cars, the demise of the small MPV, driving around in a Victorian Winter garden, taking a Hispano Suiza to We Buy Any Car, and the return of Jonny’s Prelude-loving ‘90s housemate.

Funny you mention the B-Class, not sure if you remember the advert with the spinning B over other signs. Well late at night one ad aired with the spinning B over the sign for the shop called Pollocks - I never saw the ad again and I don't think I was drunk or half asleep so any chance you can confirm it actually happened?

2023-02-05 19:35:45 +0000 UTCI've also just purchased some Michelin mats for my 2019 Mazda6 Estate, I am really picky about my rubber mats preffering OEM choices. Mazda don't offer them for the 6 in this country, so went to Halfords and saw them on the shelf. Impressed with them so far, and no I never knew Michelin made car mats! My god-daughter is called Robyn, however I haven't yet 'pulled the trigger' on the Wells Vertige, OTSOT.

2023-02-03 09:45:05 +0000 UTCOn demise of small MPV, honourable mention should goes to the VW SpwaaaaartVan, which I recall could come with a spwaaaartvan side decal that doesn’t look out of space rather than that B-max’s accidental sticker.

2023-02-01 01:53:23 +0000 UTCVertige (vairteej) is apparently French for “fear of heights” Makes sense. Local car to me and have seen the prototype around for years now - nice looking thing. Andy (from Long “Itchington”)

2023-01-31 23:03:59 +0000 UTCThe Michelins are roundest tire reminds me of a story from my first job after college. Early 90s in the final era of Akron Ohio as the Rubber Capital of the World, I worked at a mold pattern shop. The older engineer relayed a visit to a Michelin factory in France for a service call. They were so secretive about their processes that they hung tarps around the machine and lowered him through the roof in a basket to perform the service.

2023-01-31 15:03:41 +0000 UTCJust listening to podcast, did love the rally side businesses from last week; made me think of how Toyota won all those Rallies in the 90’s? Must have relied on Nicky De-Mist(Grist). And what happens when the co-drivers throats get sore from constant pace notes? Well luckily the cool refreshing finnish taste of Pentti Ricola cough sweet can solve that no problem. Cheers for the podcast as always.

2023-01-31 04:27:47 +0000 UTCWish they could have used 'Robin' in the name somewhere but guess that would cause problems. Was a bit sad to see the plate ROBIN on an old Mitsubishi GTO here in NZ, rather than something more exotic

2023-01-30 22:36:08 +0000 UTCGuide at an air museum showing us De Havilland Comet said that in the days when everyone (including children) smoked on flights, the maintenance was a nightmare they would have to remove tar caked on to the wiring that ran above the cabin and stuff.

2023-01-30 12:32:16 +0000 UTCGiven Fiats are shipped into the UK via Portbury Dock at Bristol, I can only imagine the Fiat Idea was referred to on arrival as the Fiat Ideawl - given the Bristolian habit for saying "that's ideawl" instead of "thats an idea"
