This week in pictures we have Ozzy Osbourne’s quad bike, a screen grab from Popbitch about James Dyson’s weird dehydration regime, a Vauxhall Agila with its tiny exhaust, that Welsh Volvo garage, and a Daihatsu Angel Fish.

Yes, it was the early semi facelift from 1984 with the one piece headlights but still the smaller bumpers and non tinted rear lights. Finally traded in at 180k and 14 years for a Toyota Camry - much to my annoyance.

Apropos of absolutely nothing: I've just been watching "Inside the Factory" with Gregg Wallace, and he just said, "My liquid delivery has been pumped from the silo!". THAT'S YOUR CHRISTMAS PRESENT.

A folded bath towel under the carpets changed weekly is also a good way of drying a car out, especially with foam-backed carpets.

Ahhh, the old tennis ball on a string trick. My late brother in law ran a small car spares shop for a number of years and one of his regular customers used this method for his Sierra estate into a rather snug garage. Then came the day he swapped it for a later model of the Sapphire kind. Reversed into the garage waiting for the tennis ball to tap the rear window, you can guess the rest , ooops

Want to her what Rich and Johnny sound like after a bit too much recreational drugs? Get to the bit where they start discussing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and play it at 0.5x speed!

I'll bet the Audi did last him the 15 years! Great story I'd of been very envious at the time (my Dad had Passats) was it a 2 tone early flat front model?

I may be able to explain Richards attempts to persuade his Dad to buy a Tagora. Back then I was also a avid brochure collector, Talbot did do a very well photographed and laid out brochure and a few interesting alloy options. In comparison my Dad had 3 Passat Estates in a row from 82-88 (all cash on his business then depreciated against tax) and despite my best efforts in showing him the monthly Ford brochure he wouldn't budge and get a Granada Estate. He did however replace the final GL5 Passat with a Range Rover Vogue Edition so worth the wait!

As to the early comments about why the JFK convertible wasn't simply crushed, I maybe have a bit of an answer to that. Kennedy's VP and successor, Lyndon B Johnson, was a Lincoln man, through and through. One, a white convertible, sold recently at auction for 140K. LBJ fitted his cars with snow tires so he could drive around offroad on his sprawling Texas ranch. Here's the fun part: he was usually quite tipsy when he did this - he'd have a large tumbler of ice and Cutty Sark in his hand, while at the wheel, and would occasionally stop and rattle the empty glass, whereupon a following Secret Service detail would scurry to refill the cup. JFK's limo, SS-100-X was thus not bound for the crusher post-assassination. Instead, it was gutted, re-painted black, then refitted as an armoured car. It served LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and Carter.

The Morris Minor always seemed under-exhausted, providing that that charismatic fart as you change between gears.

Also clear out the scuttles and pollen filter - if these get blocked water just seems to make its way to the footwells.

Ed Storer

That’s a great suggestion. I’ll do some digging

I bet something quiet but with a huge engine like a Silver Shadow is a strong contendor. Or that 8.2 liter Cadillac Eldorado

One to ponder… what’s the biggest ratio of engine displacement / total exhaust tip area? A point of discussing for the ‘cast perhaps. Let’s use some maths and calculate capacity / area of exhaust tip(s). For the Agila it’s 1200cc/(pi x 1cm^2) = 381.97 assuming 1cm radius of circular exhaust tip The quad exhaust tip on the 500 abarth comp must surely be a contender for the other end of the spectrum. Assuming 2cm radius on each tip we get - 1400cc / 4(pi x 2^2) = 27.85 27.85 is a hugely different value from the 381.97 of the mk1 Agila. The abarth is like drinking a milkshake through an oversize straw and the Agila like using a needle. Both completely ridiculous for different reasons.

I always felt the first gen Tata Safari was exceptionally narrow so I guess that could be a bit of an angel fish, especially with the roofline appearing to gently go up towards the rear.

During the 80s, my late dad was the very proud owner of an Audi Coupe GT (2.2 5cyl, manual) which he cherished (As did I due to the rally connection but mostly because I thought it looked like the DeLorean of off BTTF. ) Anyway, being of the wartime generation, he always saved up, bought a car nearly new and then kept it for a minimum of 15 years. Ensuring the longevity involved the car being dried off with a chamois every evening and garaged without fail. To help with the parking, he had rigged up an elaborate system of two pieces of orange nylon string, with a metal meat skewer attached to each end, through the eyelet of which was pushed a large ball of cotton wool. These were adjusted to the exact length and distace apart to perfectly meet the angle of the windscreen, thus ensuring perfect garage wall distancing at all times.

To dry out the Insight, mop up as much water as possible, then use an electric de-humidifier ;)

I used to service that Quad along with the 2 Yamaha YZ 125's, Polaris Quad and Suzuki LT 80's. Every year we were tasked with getting them up and running for the summer. This usually involved cleaning stale mouse piss out it the carbs. That Banshee was an animal.

Andy Dover

A very overpriced, old, quad.

Remoc

A 70s mini 850 is also up there.

John Reymondos

When it comes to pea-shooter exhausts, the Reliant Rialto/Robin comes to mind as the exhaust appears to be made from drinking straws. Very thin and mostly straight with only a few bends.
