Podcast 110 - Cars from the year you were born
Added 2022-05-29 17:01:01 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard pick cars from the years they were born, once Jonny's remembered what year that was.
Also in this episode, electric scooter racing, casually flutey behaviour, seeing Andrew Ridgeley, people in Cornish taverns of the '80s, Rick Stein's idiotic breakfasts, a very expensive Mercedes, almost buying old S-Classes, indecisive Nick Mason constantly buying his own Ferrari, Queen at the lathe, and the wonders of a straight six.

This has to be your best episode!

2025-02-19 22:57:07 +0000 UTCI was born in 86, and that leaves me with a VERY difficult choice. The Aston Martin V8 Zagato is immensely cool, and an Aston Martin, so is great for me. The Porsche 959 is legendary, and would be fun, but I'm just not that much of a Porsche fan. Finally there's the Sierra RS Cosworth, which is iconic and a bit twatish so is fitting for me. Or, as a 4th option curveball, the Lamborghini LM002, for shits and giggles.

2022-06-02 08:41:23 +0000 UTCThe ones I choose from my year (1999) Pagani Zonda, Audi A2, Ferrari 360, 996 gt3 and of course Jonny’s Honda Insight. It’s was quite a good year I think…

2022-06-01 14:40:00 +0000 UTCGive the talk of Curry Wurst, surely you're aware they have a VW Part code for them? Volkswagen Currywurst - Volkswagen Original Part, 199 398 500 A. Famously made to serve in the staff canteens but also available as bbq fodder for the rest of us. Not sure if German and Swedish do any cheaper knock off wurst though.... PS. A quick google reveals they've just stopped and gone vegetarian, not sure if there's truth in that, can't imagine the team in the canteen being to happy - https://www.carscoops.com/2021/08/volkswagen-stops-producing-its-most-popular-product-currywurst-sausages/

2022-06-01 11:19:34 +0000 UTCAll the talk of little V6s, I just realised the Mercedes-AMG One uses a 1.6-litre V6 underneath all the wires, batteries, turbochargers and other hybrid-related gubbins. Do I win a prize? Can it be cake?

2022-06-01 09:47:35 +0000 UTCJust listening to the podcast and I feel like I can add something to the breakfast matter. I believe the very dark bread you are referring to is in fact pumpernickel. One interesting way to eat this is to leave it in your mouth for a while because it will get quite sweet. I think the starch breaks down into sugar or something, not too sure. The breakfast sausage are of course to be enjoyed with pretzels, sweet mustard and a tall glass of weissbier (wheat beer). Yes, that's still a breakfast. Oh and I did actually own a Subaru Forester from my birthyear (97) for a bit but the greatest car from that year might be the Porsche gt1 Evo street version. Not sure if that counts though.

2022-06-01 06:23:31 +0000 UTCThe best for my year '68 seem to be the Jaguar XJ6, Ferrari Daytona, Lamborghini Espada, Dodge Charger and worst seems to be the Subaru 360. However I fully expect Jonny to like this wreck :-)

2022-05-31 12:25:28 +0000 UTCApropos of convertibles in winter, I recently acquired a Caterham Seven. I discovered, quite quickly, that it provides a unique experience when it comes to maintaining body temperature on a chilly day. All the hot air generated by the engine floods into the footwells, so your legs from the feet to the knees maintain a temperature of around 300°c. From the waist up, you're at the mercy of the elements, but this can be countered by wearing an enormous jacket, gloves and beanie. That's all well and good but at some point you have to get out of the car. It's a strong look when you're standing inside a Wild Bean Cafe and ordering a skinny latte dressed in race boots, shorts and a bright orange puffer jacket the size of a small hatchback. If I wasn't so old and fucked I could probably make the excuse that I was on the way to or way back from a rave. Sadly, I just look like a massive twat.

2022-05-31 07:06:19 +0000 UTC‘71 for me, so dream is a Maserati Bora but more realistically I’d probably be able to afford a Fiat 127… 🤪

2022-05-30 22:25:00 +0000 UTCBorn in 2001 so my initial thought is V6 Clio, I do actually own a 51 plate (the same as myself) however it's a 2002 corolla t sport so not quite on the ball however it was announced in 2001 but didn't hit the streets till early 2002 from what I can tell

2022-05-30 22:21:24 +0000 UTCAs I was born in 1977, I’d probably go for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

2022-05-30 20:51:57 +0000 UTCHow could I forget the Renault 5? Brilliant design, the 70s mini really.
Jim Galbraith
2022-05-30 17:42:40 +0000 UTCI speculate 1973 could have been lean because manufacturers were being forced to comply with stricter emissions and safety standards esp from 1970 - must have been harder to push new designs through to market worrying whether they’d be or remain compliant. The BB was never sold in the USA as it wasn’t compliant - which is a decision that must’ve taken balls.
Jim Galbraith
2022-05-30 16:44:14 +0000 UTCSame year 1973 and was going to list same cars, but no need now.

2022-05-30 13:44:10 +0000 UTC1973? A particularly lean year, wasn't it. You did better than I did though - wiki doesn't mention the Stratos or the RS in its list of cars introduced in 73. But it does mention the Caterham 7, Maserati Khamsin, Opel Kadett and the Reliant Robin!

2022-05-30 13:01:16 +0000 UTCI think the Ferrari 365BB (‘73) is an absolute styling high point - it makes the 308 GTB look heavy handed!
Jim Galbraith
2022-05-30 11:13:44 +0000 UTCStratos. 911 2.7RS. Ferrari 365BB. Allegro.

2022-05-30 10:17:01 +0000 UTCIn my year (I'm right at the end) I get the 'Dogashite' and more importantly the brilliant Sprint. Quite a few significant ones in Autocar article for year including Honda Civic, Renault 5, X1/9, Ford Granny (once claim to name sorted), W116 S Class, Jensen Healy, Fiats 126 & 132 and Lancia Beta lol to name a few. Not the most glamorous year but an enduring one (except Beta!!)...do also get De Tomaso Longchamp and 365 GT4 2+2 Ferrari & Maserati Merak!

2022-05-30 10:14:37 +0000 UTCBmw M1 came out the year i was born. I think Rick Stein is from Oxfordshire and he does drive an old Defender, it's prominent in most of his shows

2022-05-30 08:19:41 +0000 UTCDon't tell anyone, but I'm not much of an E36 fan. From that year I'd rather have an E34 Touring, but of course that doesn't work in this game.

2022-05-30 08:00:53 +0000 UTCThere is some interesting options for 1983. Suski Mighty Boy… but I am going for the Land Rover Defender or if I want to die very quickly the Ruf BTR.

2022-05-29 23:35:26 +0000 UTCRealistic option: Fiat 124 Spider Dream: Fiat Dino It was quite a good year for cars https://motor-car.net/vehicles-1960s/launched-in-1966?start=15
Robin Capper
2022-05-29 23:29:40 +0000 UTC1981's cars are pretty poor, the sensible choice would be the E28 5 series over the B2 Passat or Triumph Acclaim. In reality though the Fiat Argenta, Talbot Samba or Oltcit Club would be my choice.

2022-05-29 21:23:45 +0000 UTCI'd have to borrow one from the previous year and go for a Ford Puma.

2022-05-29 21:16:48 +0000 UTCDidn’t Andrew Ridgeley buy into an F3 racing career or something, after Wham? I remember him getting some dismissive comments about it at the time, ie he was slow/crashy but I reckoned, well good on you, that’s what I’d do!
Jim Galbraith
2022-05-29 21:14:59 +0000 UTCProbably an XJS for me as well. Either that or a Ferrari 308.

2022-05-29 19:08:56 +0000 UTCWell I was only born in 1990, I already have my Discovery that was built that year and almost bought an Elan M100 built in '90 but by your rules my choice would have to be the Lotus Carlton. I would say the NSX but it wasn't available in the UK until 1991.
Matt Tester
2022-05-29 18:47:57 +0000 UTC1966 Olds' Toronado for me - in fact, I've just searched and found one born in the same month as me. Blimmin' blimey.

2022-05-29 18:33:58 +0000 UTCThe Mazda 1.8L V6 was in the same engine family as their 2.5L, so external dimensions aren't as compact as you might think ... but it was at least a 60 degree design.

2022-05-29 18:27:05 +0000 UTCHaven’t listened yet as its a Monday thing for me, but I actually have a car from the year I was born. 1978 Volvo 245 DL, 6 months younger than me though as it was checked off the assembly line on 5 Dec. I’m in better condition though…. Dont get me wrong my suspension joints are a bit knackered too but I definitely require less welding. **EDIT** having just listened I realise the Volvo doesn’t count, as it wasnt released in ‘78, just built Also, living in Cornwall I would say you’d be better accepted coning down in the defender than the Rangey, and as long as you dont own a second home here you’ll be fine 😁
Adam
2022-05-29 18:18:58 +0000 UTCHad to laugh at the weird breakfasts… as a frequent traveller to Japan I have become master of the mixed Asian/Western breakfast! Typical fayre would be miso soup, fish based congee, fish along with hash browns, bacon and beans! Weird…!

2022-05-29 18:12:14 +0000 UTCI've only ever had one car from the year I was born (1966), it was a Thunderbird Town Hardtop. Coincidentally after buying it and looking at the build info on the door tag I discovered it was "born" within about 2 weeks of myself!
Ed Nicholson
2022-05-29 17:29:43 +0000 UTCHi both, is there an RSS feed for the podcast so I can download it on my preferred podcast catcher? And, yes, that is the most boring question I've ever asked any published author or TV and YouTube celebrity person.
