Podcast 92 show notes

Hello again friends. What do we have this week? Well, first up is a picture of that SL280 that Jonny spotted in London. His memory was playing tricks because it's not silver, although the tape holding the mirror on is. Then we have those odd Palm Angel ads, a picture of Coronation Street stalwart Mike Baldwin enjoying a (disappointingly small) measure of whiskey, and finally an ad for the North Edition of the Ford Explorer. Finally, some links...

Lovely to see 90s R129s getting admiration. My generation Merc. Never really lusted after them but decided to buy one recently. Purchased a ‘99 SL500 on Bring a Trailer because it looked nice and honestly couldn’t be happier. Except I learned of the Sport package with side skirts and AMG alloys post-sale and wished I knew of that beforehand. Never mind though. Love driving it and do so at every opportunity. Almost time to stow the hard top 😁

My god Jonny. Jurassic Park is known for having so so many scenes that are NOT CGI! You have to see it. And JP2. The rest are crap. But basically all scenes were the dinos aren't walking/you can't see the legs, are full size animatronics. The Behind the scenes material is almost as amazing as the movies themself.

Have to add we never get North Face tie up cars. Fords are usually Eddie Bauer edition (google the nautica villager minivan- for an eye treat), which do make puffer jackets, are seen in a more 'your dad,' light than mountain climbing North Face. While Ford Explorers probably printed money for them, tend to always suck, most so the first generation.

Can I please ask for more information about the ‘Secret Ford’s’ book that Richard has mentioned a couple of times, I have searched for it on Amazon U.K. and not found anything close. Thanks

On that Meatloaf side of things, on discussing his passing with a mate he pondered whether it was a heart attack that measured on the Richter scale. Assuming it was a weight reference, I commented that he had lost a lot of weight compared to his heyday (when I saw him get his nose broken by a bottle of piss at Reading '88 for example). "Oh no" my mate replied "he had the mother of tempers, he was the one person on the planet who could make Gary Busey seem like a calm and reasonable person". He promptly shared this with me: https://youtu.be/fhIWAuHvulA Rich should be relieved that he didn't take real exception to the TG offices!

Slight Anoraky note on MG Owners Club, there are actually 2 enormous clubs, the MGOC is based in Cambridge, and the MGCC is based in Kimber House in Abingdon. I've worked with the MGCC and they are impressively well set up, they are very accepting of modern MGs and regularly work with SAIC.

Palm angels chat was a particularly highlight, this continues to be a vital part of my Monday morning! So many laughs as per usual cheers

I remember eating dinner in an Indian restaurant. There was suddenly a lot of shouting from the kitchen. Then when our food was being served, the waiter had a bit of blood on his sleeve and was trying to use his other arm as much as possible. I concluded that the chef stabbed the waiter.

Also re Explorers - whilst not a North Face spec one I had a 2010 XLT when it was 3 years old. Useless as a 4x4 and hopelessly underpowered for a 4.0 V6 (compared to the 2007 V6 Pathfinder My wife had at the same time) but to be fair it was quite tough. When my twins were about 3 weeks old and I was running on absolute empty i drove it into the back of a bus on a roundabout queue on the way to pick up kebabs, and it barely damaged the bumper. It also got sideswiped by a truck on roundabout and while the rear quarter was quite wrecked it still drove straight. Some time later it started doing weird stuff like putting itself into Low Range at traffic lights, which was fun, so I got rid.

Ref “Phil’s Berlingo” i had a similar sliding door experience in an old vauxhall Midi van back in the late 90s. I’d just delivered a telly or something and was pulling away in my usual 19 year old enthusiastic style when i heard a loud CLICK - SLIDE as the door released itself and shot back and straight off the centre runner. The bottom runner held on and caused the door to hinge down like a wing on an aeroplane, and it hit a BMW E30 in the A pillar and windscreen, with the effect of a massive blunt, blue axe.

Are the Palm Angles like the Avengers? Do they save people from stiff, non assisted steering and enforce palming

Am I right in thinking it was the pedal getting jammed under the carpet?

Mark Sheridan

Lol I was talking about 2017 but as I said I switched career later in life. So I know what your talking about. But that leads me onto another example. You also have to experience other subjects. Despite the manufacturing background I'm teaching Computing. So I get to experience a woodwork class. WOW you want to see a relaxed teacher watch someone who is teaching Year 7's with extremely sharp objects. Small little minion type characters all wandering around with chisels , hammers , planes (to shave wood not to fly). etc etc . The person was almost horizontal.

Paul Smith

Palm angels sounds like a masturbatory euphemism eg " don't wait for me lads, I'm just going to visit the Palm Angels in the downstairs bog"

Matthew Aves

It's quite amazing really to think back at some of the classes we had and the equipment we had access to as kids in the 80s... cooking, woodwork, metalwork etc... PE was running with scissors , throwing knives, juggling glassware and climbing barbed-wire fences in your underpants (forgot me kit, sir).

Dark Newt

Monkey In a Voyager. I know, I know. It's Serious.

Firstly yes Monday morning but enjoy reading on Sunday night the patreon notes. Just following your Berlingo story. A few years ago I retrained as a teacher later in life through personal reasons. I'd worked in manufacturing, have a degree in Engineering and my dad was an Engineering manager. So fast forward to a few years ago and despite training as a secondary teacher you need to do a week in primary. The school was brilliant but the last day I'm with a year 6 class. They are doing craft and making fair ground amusement models. The teacher stresses "if anyone uses using the drill DO NOT DRILL THROUGH A DESK". They are using a bit and brace. I concentrate on helping a small group. Then like Gremlins at Christmas more start to appear around where I am. Then one has the courage to say "Sir can you help us with the drill?". I ask what about the teacher to which one replies "Oh he has had to leave , he drilled through his finger". I walk to where the drill is to find the drill along with blood. As it was my last afternoon, to this day I do not know how he drilled through his own finger with a bit and brace

Paul Smith

Haha! Check out the "Notable users" of the Ensoniq VFX list on Wikipedia - I believe it must last have been edited by Roy Lanchester or one of his associates :-D

Prince Naseem did have an SLR & the crash is why he went to prison and lost his MBE.

Me too. Sunday evening prelude, wondering how the conversation meanders through all the pictures. Then, first pod on when I’m getting ready Monday morning, easing myself into the week.

Giant Iain

Wasn’t that the “unintended acceleration” Audi 5000?

Jeffrey Smith

Sunday evening read the podcast notes. Then monday morning listen to the podcast. Why ? No idea it's just how i roll

Wasn't the explorer recalled for sticky throttle pedals? Perfect for jousting...

I need to go and search through the kids books for Quick Quack now, can't remember as been a few years! Great series of books, makes a change from Julia Donaldson, she must be able to afford a decent car or two?

andrew philbey

Oi Frog is indeed excellent! And make sure you get the Oi Frog adjacent Quick Quack Quentin too, as it has the best closing line in a book!
