Podcast 70 - The Bugatti Royale of tractors

Jonny draws our attention to a very expensive second hand tractor and Richard shares the true story behind the infamous Top Gear indestructible Hilux film.

Also in this episode, bin food, electricity pylons, cooling towers, scary public information films, utility company special vehicles, strange posters on your childhood bedroom walls, non-swearwords used by grandparents, poker players' bad sunglasses, obscure brand petrol stations, Shaggy as a KGB agent, and why Bristol needs a nineties quarter.

Plus we ask the vital question, are some animals thick?

On the County Tractors side of things, my dad's old studio backed onto their yard in Fleet where I grew up and he did a bunch of advertising for them. He was warned just before they went belly-up to make sure he was paid on his latest invoice pronto by one of their staff.

Rolf Harris' wrinkled big toe in the learn to swim PSA is the most horrific image in a PSA

Bob Burr

Now here in the States I don’t remember the graphic PSA’s about pylons and substations. But we did get them for driving education. Mostly from the 1960s with graphic wreck footage and aftermath of fire. Did you get those in the UK as well? Always wear your seatbelt.

Harry Hare looks guilty, though. I bet he pushed him.

Willy Weasel doesn't learn either, he gets hit again, by what looks like the same car, in another advert! https://youtu.be/2zLBLYnTCkA?t=146

Mark Elliott

Ooops. Thought this vehicle (link above) would be apposite.

If you enjoy being damaged permanently because of memories of Public Information Films, like Apache, Dark Water etc, may I suggest @ScarredForLife2 on the twitter. Top triggering and more stuff that you’ve deeply repressed than you could ever imagine.

On odd old government information films, these sprang right to mind Willy Weasel gets bonneted because he went to the ice cream van without Mummy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JgaId8o9Jo Own brand Quentin Crisp refuses to tell the police what's inside his stolen saddle bag https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pypDV2gis0M The persistence of Petunia's nagging leads Joe to deadly indifference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aysRn-P2AI0

Growing up in Sheffield where Threads was filmed was enough terror in the 80s for me.

Interesting to hear Jonny almost died in Kritiansund, I happened to be looking at the place recently on Google Maps, along with the nearby Atlantic Road. I fancy a roadtrip to get some cheese from Burträsk in Sweden and take it to Molde in Norway, OTSOT. Probably Richard's fault.

Matt Tester

Another fantastic show chaps, whether you talks about cars or not doesn't really make a difference.

Brilliant podcast guys! I remember watching the safety video for the power line in primary school. This was in 2005

When I heard the words “Look and Read” I thought it was going to happen, a triggering mid-run, then it veered away, before the word “Tripods” was uttered. Just no.

Ant Brown

BTW - you really should promote the fact that I can listen to your podcasts by just saying "Alexa play Smith and Sniff".

Andrew Jones

I’ll see your Apache and raise you The Boy From Space. Sorry to go nuclear, but nothing beats that for 1980s pant-wetting terror.

Ant Brown

The Hi-lux episode was a stand out. interesting to hear the background.

Andrew Jones

Holy shit that is bad

Tim Organo

I haven't listened yet but I swear to god if you start talking about that child drowning in slurry in the 'Apaches' public information film, that's going to open up some mental scars from being tortured by those movies as a child.
