Podcast 43 - show notes

Hello hello. Here are some things related to episode 43 of the podcast. The lead image is, of course, of a Toyota Hilux Surf even though Richard doesn't want one and Jonny isn't going to buy one. The other two images are Richard's crap photos of a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber circling the mountains near Burbank, California and Chaka Khan in an old car. She's under the mass of hair in the back.

Stock mobbing: https://bit.ly/3pjDfqk (Seems like proper stock mobbing is hardcore off-roading in a showroom spec 4x4, but might also include acting like a wazzock in an old saloon car).

Urban Dictionary on the matter of 'dropping a deuce': https://bit.ly/3rWKtm9

The Toyota Isis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Isis

Toyota GT86 production ends: http://bit.ly/3d6Y7il

That Harvey Keitel ad with the weirdly placed number plate: https://youtu.be/jQirllj_0QA

Technics jacket on Amazon (sadly sold out): http://amzn.to/3pbKlxe

Chris Voss, former head of the FBI international kidnapping negotiation team is apparently quite fond of his salsa red pearl 4runner. He apparently got a very good deal on it.

This was the jacket that (some of) the lads lusted for in the late 90s. There were a couple of Y11s (I was Y7/8 at the time) that used to strut around the corridors of highschool wearing them. I never liked them though (both the wet-look strutters and the jacket). I thought they looked a bit, er, naff. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mens-Naff-Co-54-Premium-Bomber-Size-XXL-/265010490989?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

If not a Hilux Surf for Jonny, then maybe a Toyota Deliboy with liquor store penguins? https://car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=158372&country=uk

Go on, you know you want to... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Kenwood-Audio-Satin-Bomber-Varsity-Jacket-Size-Small-34-36-Graphic-Mint-/193164389382

This is really sad but I may as well mention it. When you were joking about the jackets and Jonny mentioned Kenwood and how many food mixers they sold I'd like to point out that the Kenwood that make food mixers isn't the same one who makes Audio gear. One is Kenwood Ltd (a UK company) and one is Kenwood Corp (a US company). I only learnt this myself last year after watching this Techmoan video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50kWgke-9hg

When you said "Toyota Isis" I thought it would be similar to something from the Toyota War. Related ownership history story: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-plumber-i-didnt-sell-my-truck-to-isis/

Reed

Am i the only one who initially thought you were talking about some sort of Lego Technics jacket?

Mat Guest

Round my school it was Nevica ski jackets that were Uber cool, much more so than your cheap pretend Campri ones!

Tengocity

Whaaaa...?

Smith and Sniff

Wow, now you mention it, yes. Very much so. Richard

All this talk of the Hilux Surf (or "4Runner", as we call them over here) reminds me of the 4Runner I had in high school. I successfully tested Toyota's reputation for durability by running the engine almost completely out of oil, and on a separate occasion, sliding it sideways into a frozen tree in the middle of January. I treated it rather terribly, but nonetheless, went on to sell it for a profit. They're fantastic!

Ben Lucareli

On the theme of big brands who sell more merch than actual product: Daily Telegraph are the UK’s biggest retailer of towels.

Postman Pat, Postman Pat, Postman Pat and his love of combat, Early in the morning, Starts the engine warming, In his borrowed Urutu APC. Postman Pat, Postman Pat, Postman Pat and his Rooikat, All the birds are fleeing, Because they all were seeing, a stone wall flattened by a dark green T-14. Everybody knows, the familiar sound, Of parcels thrown from an Apache, hitting the ground, Maybe, You can never be sure, They'll be tick, Bang, Shrapnel through your door, Hey hey, Postman Pat, Postman Pat, Postman Pat and his war crimes trial, He kept his details too vague, When answering to the Hague, We feel he's a really dangerous man.

The postman pat song 🤣🤣🤣

I actually still have mine from when I was a teenager. It was bright yellow thirty years ago but decades of use as a garage jacket, crawling under cars and motorbikes etc, have rendered it a grotty beige. Still fits though!

David Maddock

The Campri ski jacket! Tremendous overly colourful school jacket for kids in the late 80's...didn't they sell them in C&A?

Owain Kelly

Surely "Rose Bowl Parade" is another good John Peel band name!

Kit Fletcher

The Rose Bowl Parade is to a West County fair much like the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth is to a local school board appointment.

Stigfan

Great chat - I love the tow car discussion. My first tow car (for my E30 Racing 325i) was an E90 330d. Chewed the rears up far too quickly! Now we use a Passat Alltrack. (Am I right in remembering that Damon Hill is a fellow owner?) Cheers.

Rors Plant

If anyone cares the cool surf guitar at the end of the Direct Line ad is El Superagente Secreto by the Vulcanos - an excellent band https://youtu.be/ajSY_XqqenY

For me it’s got to be technics jacket and and a cavalier sri 🥳

joe brudenell

Is it just me or is the way Harvey Keitel says 'burglar alarm' very Glaswegian??

Lisa Monsterken

Re. Chaka Khan - I didn't see her at first, before I read the post properly, and just noted the slanted beige surface in front of her with flowers on top and assumed that it was her coffin. I had to search about her death and then re-read the post.

Chris Squirrel

I heard they planned a stop at Charnock Richard for a slash 'n' dash but they received some intel en route that there was ongoing transient glory hole activity so gave it a swerve and instead pissed in a cherryade bottle and horsed it out of the bomb doors onto the hard shoulder of the M50...

Rup (FastAsFunk)

Not even a quick stop at Leigh Delamere for a wee and a grab bag of Quavers?

Smith and Sniff

Years ago I visited the Royal International Air Tattoo and the B-2 Spirit was a visitor but it didn't stop. At all. The USAF flew it over from it's base in the USA (somewhere in Missouri I think), did a few flypasts along the runway flanked by a couple of F-15 Eagles, then flew it straight back to the USA again. Do not stop. Do not pass go. Do not collect 200 Silk Cuts or a bottle of scotch. Absolutely incredible.
