New Elephant Town on TUESDAY, due to "Labor Day," aka Ollie

I totally forgot that this is a three-day weekend for most of you! I'll put new pages up Tuesday, when more people are behind their computer screens.

I'm not actually taking Labor Day off; I'll be coloring the pages all day tomorrow, because I spent most of my Coloring Day at the emergency vet with this sweet furry buddy:

Turns out our boy Ollie has kitty asthma! He had a horrible, scary, and mucus-filled attack on Friday, but after several hours in an oxygen chamber and some prednisone, he's feeling a lot better.

Right now I'm just making him an indoor cat (no more Jester Ollie) and monitoring him, but the may need an inhaler. As someone who needed an inhaler in high school, I sympathize with him.

(The actual feline inhaler looks.... like a penis pump.)

Pip greeted Ollie with unprecedented hisses due to his new eau de toi-VET, but since the smell has worn off, he's been taking good care of him.

I'll be back Tuesday. I hope you find some time for BBQ pool beer movie orgy scrolling Instagram, or whatever you consider NOT working!

SEVENTEEN!! That's promising; my vet indicated that asthma was fairly uncommon (but maybe she said "common" and I misheard? WHY DO WE EVEN BOTHER COMMUNICATING ORALLY WITHOUT A RECORD OF EVERY WORD?!), and mentioned that a side effect of constant steroid use is diabetes, which is why she recommended the inhaler. On the other hand, I listened to a YT video from someone with an asthmatic cat who uses an inhaler, and he indicated that the inhaler can cause weight gain?! Six/half-dozen, y'know? I figure as long as he's breathing and eating, and not too stressed by whichever medication he's on, he's good. :) And I appreciate your anecdote, thank you!!

That's exactly what Izzy would do right before she'd start into her marathons of hucking. The first time it happened, I thought she just hated every type of food I kept trying to give her. After she dropped 6 lbs in a month and a half from constant barfing (because cats *will* starve themselves to death) she spent some quality time at a vet's office getting the diagnosis. It's unbelievably common yet rarely diagnosed here. In Izzy's case, after the initial round of anti-fungal meds and cocktails to soothe her esophagus and stomach, all of which she hated like smoking hot lava, the long-term treatment was simply to give her a little prednisolone for a few days every time she started wheezing again. She lived to be nearly 17. But I am NOT a vet and I'm sure you're going to do exactly the right thing for Ollie's health and well-being. I'm just telling you my anecdote because it's something that's often overlooked. *HUGS* to you and your furbabies!

Ruth Merriam

She really did! It's funny how the hierarchy decides who grooms whom!

Danielle Corsetto

Oh my gosh, poor little sweetie! Yeah, I should have said that he PROBABLY has asthma; he's had the characteristic long-necked-wheezing since I adopted him, but I opted out of the Xrays to properly diagnose him (they quadrupled the price of the visit). But thank you very much, I'll put that on the list!

Danielle Corsetto

Hah! Ollie parties hard, but in the "let's play a CRAZY card game" kind of way. ;)

Danielle Corsetto

Thank you, anything's more comfortable than that vet's office!! It was like 60 degrees in there!

Danielle Corsetto

aww, poor baby, but glad he's gotten treatment (and from Pip, too!)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Aww...! Pip is a good Senior Staff Feline. Ellie trained him well.

Andy Ihnatko

Much love to you and Ollie, hate having to go to the emergency vet.

Alenka Figa

Eeek, sounds scary! Glad he's feeling better, and chuckling that you might get a penis-pump-looking inhaler out of the deal. Hope you get some pleasant downtime too!

Theadora

All the sympathies and I'm so glad Ollie is oxygenated again. One of my (now deceased from old age) cats developed a histoplasmosis infection when she was young. Thanks, Ohio River Valley! It caused scarring in her lungs and a reflux reaction that would bring on bouts of hucking if her esophagus got even a little bit irritated. Yeah. In a cat. Fun times, let me tell you. So maybe have Ollie checked for that, too. Big love to the handsome fella in the tux.

Ruth Merriam

Don't you just hate it when the cat stops breathing...good to hear he's feeling better!

MaryAnne Glazar

Glad Ollie doing better! I have to admit at first I thought Ollie was doing bong hits in the topper!

Awww, poor Ollie! I'm so glad you got him taken care of, and that you have support for kitty surprises in your life. Also, please snorgle him from me as obnoxiously as possible. XD

Amy Crook

Omigosh that sounds SO SCARY. Very glad he’s back to regular breathing. 💔💕

David Neale-Lorello

Oh no, poor kitty! Glad he's come out alright. It's always so scary when your pets are sick and they just can't tell you what's wrong...

Bori Vekony

I'm glad he's doing better. Even if you're working hopefully today a more restful day as you work from home, or a place more comfortable than the vet's office
