Monday Spaceholder: closeups of Elephant Town artwork

If you're reading this the moment it goes up, I've probably just gotten home from my final planned visit with loved ones this year, a weekend away with some of my oldest friends in comics, at a quiet little beach in New Jersey.

Between the beach and Luke's birthday on Friday, I knew this would have to be an actual Monday update (instead of my usual Sunday night goal). So I scheduled a little post to share in the meantime, so that you have something to enjoy Monday morning. :)

My pal NJGR asked me recently if I could share a photo of this original page, to see how different it looks in color...

Pretty different. :)

Here are a few more that I was happy with:

I decided to use a regular old graphite pencil (well, a Palomino Blackwing, so no ORDINARY graphite pencil) to outline the crowds on these two.

Really like the way it came out. Here's the earlier crowd scene, which I inked in black, because the crowd was meant to be the focus of that panel:

And here's a sneak peek at one of the next pages:

... which you'll see colored soon. :)

I try to keep my original pages as complete as I can, so that if someone buys a page, it still has some of the same atmospheric impact that the finished, colored page has. It makes some things a little more difficult, but I'm a lot happier with the originals in the end.

Hmm, maybe I'll show you what I made for Luke's birthday when I'm home...

Stone Harbor! We had a house there (later, one in Avalon) when I was growing up; got to go in summer if there were no renters that week (not very often), plus in the off-season -- my favorite time for beach towns. The Jersey Shore stereotype never made sense to me either back then ...

Ahh Avalon! My friend and I walked up the beach to the edge of Avalon yesterday, and he pointed it out to me. :) Yeah, my idea of the Jersey Shore is radically different than the TV show (and, probably, the reality of the rest of it) because I've really only been to Stone Harbor, Ventnor (my brother's in-laws' place), and the boardwalk at Wildwood. Lucky you to have a place to go in Avalon!

YES!!! My notebooks are the ones that are filled with the notes (surrounding sketches trying to get an emotion right for a character), but I do love seeing that sort of easter egg, myself. :)

Nice! I DO approve the location My family has a place in Avalon, so I know SH well. When you said "quiet beach", I suspected you might mean there because there aren't many other towns that don't turn into zoos this time of year.

Richard Thompson originals! Those must be _magical_ in person. Original art from the pre-digital age is such a thorough _document,_ isn't it? A big part of the thrill is seeing all of the notes in the margins, the do-overs...then flipping it over and discovering some warmup sketches, or even hastily-scribbled details about an upcoming flight or appointment because the artist grabbed the closest sheet of paper during a phone conversation.

You spoil us.

I'm sure you will!! I've always loved owning original art that still has the feel (and if I'm lucky, the words) of the finished page. My most prized originals are Yuko & Ananth's first Girl With The Skeleton Hand page from Johnny Wander, and two original Cul de Sac strips by Richard Thompson, both of which have all the deliciously lettered dialogue right on the page. <3

Ahahaha!! If you're a fan of quieter beaches, I think you'll approve of the location: Stone Harbor. My friend's family owns the (older) Christmas shop in town, and have an old family home up the street that can fit dozens of overnight guests. It's the highlight of the year for most of us, myself included, no matter how many other places I travel to. :)

I was out before this even posted!! And slept for nine hours. Blissful!!

Very happy that you've chosen this route for the art! Some people are going to be very lucky to have these pieces on their walls and I hope I get to be one of 'em!

Welcome back! I hope the Jersey shore treated you well. [As an NJ native, I am required to have Opinions on the various beach towns, but I'll suppress the urge to interrogate you about which one you visited ;) ]

Daaaaang, it's beautiful no matter what! ♥ I have to say that I absolutely love that green, though. It fits perfectly! -jess
