Progress Report 0.11

Wow, we're this far into July already? Where does the time go? Guess I'd better update you all on where the next version stands.

The last two months were a little tricky, resulting in somewhat dark content matter with little sexy stuff in it. Version 0.10, in particular, was probably unsatisfying to most because of how it had to spread itself thin to fill in holes in game logic. It's one of the downsides of working with a nonlinear story. To lighten the mood and make things fun, I'm focusing on the kind of content that isn't quite so serious this time around.

I don't want to spoil exactly what it is you'll be doing when 0.11 is released, but I can reveal that all of my renders so far in this update have focused on Belle. She's acting like a demanding diva (as usual), and it's up to you to satisfy her every desire. Otherwise, she'll give you a good talking to. With lots of curse words. Oh, and maybe slit your throat in your sleep. It's best to keep her happy.

Turns out that's easier said than done. I had to scrap one idea I had because it was, uh... physically impossible. I didn't realize it until I had everything posed and saw for myself that my plan just wouldn't work. Oh well. This wouldn't be fun if it weren't challenging, so I took that scene in a different direction that is actually going to be more visually pleasing (I hope). 

Due to the nature of some of the new stuff I've rendered, one of the other girls, who we haven't played around with for a while, is going to get at least some new content added in this update. It might be incredibly minor in scope. We'll have to wait and see where I take it before the month's up. 

This part of the process is always exciting. I have plenty of directions to take the story in, but there's no reason why I have to pick one over the other, so I get to juggle my ideas around in my head until I decide which one to go for at the last minute. Accordingly, even I don't know precisely which of my concepts I'll be implementing after this Belle stuff. It's suspense for everyone, myself included.

As for the poll I posted a few days ago, support seems to be overwhelmingly for the whole "move update into next month" thing. I'll be making a decision about that soon, and I'll keep you all informed as I do.

I don't understand why so many people seem to assume that the fey parts of the game aren't part of the story. Have some faith in my storytelling and go with the flow. Everything is part of the story here. The game mechanics will vary though, but the fey parts are part of the process used to obtain the clues needed for solving secrets.

The use of things like potions and so on would allow you to add more levels of content to many of the characters. As things are you have the tree secrets but that is actually a very granual breakdown.

I would rather see the continuation of the story and more use if the games main mechanic rather than more fey content. But to each his own.

We'll see how that works out in the end. I do want it to be possible to achieve "everything" in the first playthrough if you know exactly what you're doing, but not everything might even be available until NG+.

We like internally consistent non-sexy subject matter too, dark or not. If we were just here for the sexy bits, we would have already moved on to other titles. Your mechanics and storytelling both matter. For me, they matter more than the sex. Spoiler-free example: Evelyn's relationship development with the protagonist is more impactful than her renders when you reach the farthest point in her story arc you have released. Additionally, I am looking forward to being under the clock when the game is finally finishable. I'm hoping you make it impossible to unlock all but a tiny fraction of the content in one playthrough, and that in order to meet our goal, we MUST play through ALL of the routes. When I finally save the princess, I want to have worked for it and explored every nook and cranny of your world.

We're getting closer to new spells, at least. As you say, most of them will change a lot, so getting the stuff that they will change into the game first is generally a good idea. :) Also, don't forget that fey are immune to your spells, so finding secrets about Belle isn't going to be all that useful outside of the story itself.

hope we get some more spells soon but i am guessing that comes latler cause one extra will change so much and that is a lot of work to add for one person, as for belle update i hope we get to find out more clues about her :D got to love her banter, maybe even a small secret would be nice :D

Belle seems to be quite popular indeed, only surpassed by Primrose if the recent poll is anything to go by. Let me know if you want a refund for any double charges, btw.

Fair enough. That's not the way I think when I create a magic system or a fantasy setting, however. I actively try to avoid doing something just because it's what every other setting does. If it makes sense for my setting, then sure. But doing something just because it's a fantasy trope? That's not a good argument to me. Trying to think outside the box is a great way to spur one's creativity.

Glad you are expanding Belle. Her banter with the MC is one of the most engaging things about the story. Very good and witty dialog rarely found in a VN. Her time jumping the MC was a hoot. The times the banter has caused me to smile or laugh is the reason I just upped my pledge to the next level. (Even though I know I probably will be double-billed this month, btw!)

no just potions, shrink potion and other things. i was just recommending it because i don't know which way your going to go with magic. magic changes developer to developer, while potions and runes are usually in the same premise for the games their in with what they can and cannot do, and that is acting as an exilery or a buff for the mc

I don't really see how adding runes or alchemy would open up avenues that aren't possible with straightforward magic. It sounds like you're dragging some expectations from very specific game worlds with you here. ;)

You know if you want to get the player to be able to fuck belle i highly suggest getting a rune and alchemy system in play. These two plus magic allows for more physically impossible things to not be a hindrance if set up right.
