Cheesecake Update
Added 2024-12-06 14:01:52 +0000 UTCMiss Cheesecake broke one of her incisors (the front teeth). This isn’t uncommon in capybaras, and the tooth should actually grow back in just a few weeks.
It’s important to note that rodents don’t have the same nerve endings and such in their teeth that we do. Because their teeth are constantly growing, and needing to constantly be worn down, a broken tooth is a lot less painful than it would be for you.
With that said, breaking teeth frequently is not normal, and easily broken teeth can be a sign of scurvy. Preventing scurvy is why we supplement Pumpkin and Cheesecake’s diets with vitamin c daily! So no worries about scurvy for them! 😊
She didn’t break it recently, but probably a month or two ago by smacking that tooth into something at some point. The broken portion slowly emerged from the gum line over the past two weeks, and the broken part finally broke off yesterday.
I’ll likely make a public video about it, because I think it is a good learning opportunity!
