New Maquette

I started the underpainting for this. When I got to a point where I instinctively started looking around for reference, I stopped and started making the reference.

As I said I have a bunch sketches and reference photos left over from the previous cave painting, so I went into that archive to find the ones that would match this one the closest. My friend who I used for the photos asked me not to share them so I won't.

I traced the picture of the underpainting, so that I could use the right shapes for my maquette.

I've had this thing of monster clay that I was hoping to use it for this one. I thought I had heard that the best way to soften it was in the oven. But when I looked up videos about that, they all said to use a microwave. Which confused me. So I didn't end up using it. I'll use it next time. BTW I've since learned that the microwave is in fact the best way to heat up monster clay. I was confusing my clays.

So I went back to my old sculpy.

I started by sculpting some body part templates for the legs and hips.

I just made some cylindrical forms and heated them up so that for this one and future projects I can just add clay onto the templates rather than sculpting from scratch. You can think of it as kind of a sketleton.

I did this little skull too because it's the most defined part of the study that I did.

Then I started sculpting the forms based on the outline I made from the underpainting.

Now I'll refine it down try and get it closer to what I'm going for, then light it and paint it.

Have fun

I had this experience while working on the little sculpture. I was trying to get it to fit the design and it wasn't. so I kept trying to force it to fit. But then once I just started trying to make the sculpture good on its own it started looking better. It grows organically.

It's strange what we have in our head to what we do. One part of painting or sketch that you do specifically for a piece mat not work but it's always in your mind when do a future piece. Not so good though when you keep thinking about this accident or going where it leads you because your mind says "No!" "You had a good idea, this may look great and you could do so much with it, but, no dallying around, you've got too much on the go and this isn't right for the exhibition or brief you were given" Sorry, just a little inner monologue I've got going on for a while now😬. However, I'm sure from seeing your process and skills on many previous occasions now you'll always come out with a great result. πŸ‘
