I started the underpainting for this. When I got to a point where I instinctively started looking around for reference, I stopped and started making the reference.
As I said I have a bunch sketches and reference photos left over from the previous cave painting, so I went into that archive to find the ones that would match this one the closest. My friend who I used for the photos asked me not to share them so I won't.
I traced the picture of the underpainting, so that I could use the right shapes for my maquette.
I've had this thing of monster clay that I was hoping to use it for this one. I thought I had heard that the best way to soften it was in the oven. But when I looked up videos about that, they all said to use a microwave. Which confused me. So I didn't end up using it. I'll use it next time. BTW I've since learned that the microwave is in fact the best way to heat up monster clay. I was confusing my clays.
So I went back to my old sculpy.
I started by sculpting some body part templates for the legs and hips.
I just made some cylindrical forms and heated them up so that for this one and future projects I can just add clay onto the templates rather than sculpting from scratch. You can think of it as kind of a sketleton.
I did this little skull too because it's the most defined part of the study that I did.
Then I started sculpting the forms based on the outline I made from the underpainting.
Now I'll refine it down try and get it closer to what I'm going for, then light it and paint it.
Have fun
goodnight Sweeties
