Livestream TODAY @ 2:30 EST

Friends:

As promised, I'm trying a new live-stream today at 2:30 pm EST. I'll be answering questions about Stanley planes and talking to everyone in the chat. I know it's late notice, but I had a bunch of technical issues to work out before I knew it was happening.

This stream is for everyone, but future streams will have an after-show that exclusive to Patrons and channel members.

Drop by if you can, but I'll post it as a regular video for later watching.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Work is a four-letter word. 😉

Patrick Salsbury

I like this spontaneous, unrehearsed Rex.

Ken Verleye

Looking forward to the next one, Rex!

Sean O'Neill

Hi John, I'm in central Tx too. I've had better luck on facebook marketplace than at thrift stores. I also found an old #5 on https://ctbids.com/. It's an estate sale auction site.

Steven Soulen

Yes sir it is a double edge sword. Work gets in the way quite a bit but I am happy to have it. lol. While watching the replay I heard you say you were 40ish. I had you around 35 so the saw dust must be a good preservative. I really enjoy all the content and look forward to more

Work is a curse.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, lots of bugs to work out for next time.

Rex Krueger

Get the bevel gauge for sure! It's much easier to start that way!

Rex Krueger

Thanks Rex I enjoyed what I caught prior to work watching the remainder now

Wayne

Thanks for that thoughtful response. That was very good advice. Thanks!

John Fisher

Just wanted to respond to John Fisher's query. Rex has a couple good videos about finding old tools. At one time, good tools were easily picked up at flea markets and even yard sales. This can still happen, but for me, the game is no longer worth the candle. It's difficult to find good tools w/o actually being able to pick one up and examine it closely. I would suggest estate sales, especially ones that advertise hand tools, or at least mention that there is a shop. These are tricky. You have to know that the business that handles the estate sale has a policy of not selling items early or allowing dealers to come in early and raid the place. If hand tools are mentioned in the advertisement and you have an honest seller, then get there early -- that would be an hour or more. You will almost certainly be competing against dealers and serious collectors, and if they are in line ahead of you, there will not be much left of value. That said, not all dealers are after old tools, so it depends on the sale. Another suggestion would be to get involved with a local woodworking group or an old-tool organization, like the Southwest Tool Collectors Assoc. Buying from a fellow collector/user is usually a pleasure, and most of the members will offer you a fair deal and even some advice. The Covid issue has made tool hunting a lot more difficult, but not impossible. Also, reputable dealers, often online, will usually be good sources. They are usually not as cheap as the old tool guys, and are often a lot more expensive than estate sales. I suggest Hyperkitten (weird name), but a good guy and good prices. And he deals on old tools terms, so you can't go wrong.

Well once again work go in the way of life so I missed the livestream!

D. Weltman

I've found quite a few on the Facebook Mktplace. I look locally, then it will expand the search area, and there are lots of sellers who will ship. Haven't had to do any of that yet, so dunno about the risk.

Howard Tuckey

Thanks, it was fun! :D Also the time works much better than James Wrights Live's for people in Europe :D

Daniel Bohrer

I notice you're struggling a lot with the speed of chat. A lot of live Q&A streamers have a second person hand-picking questions to pass to the streamer in a secondary chat so the streamer doesn't have to parse chat so quickly.

Scott Miller

Hmmmm lost the stream since the refresh and can't find a link now....

Andy Franqueira

Go to the you tube page, it started a second stream under a different link

Andy Franqueira

2:40 but This live event will begin in a few moments. is all I see.

Bruce Langman

Through the youtube channel page, but that has the live stream as 7:30.

Adam L

How do I find the live stream?

Jerry Moomaw

Does anyone else have problems finding old hand tools (especially planes) in their area? I'm in central TX, and there's nothing. Goodwill and Salvation Army don't even have tools in this area. Antique stores are just about as bad. I've been anxious to restore an old plane, but finding one has become quite the chore.

John Fisher

I like mine too. I use a DMT double sided diamond plate

Jerry Moomaw

I got one for like $15 from Amazon, and it was very helpful in letting me be confident when I was sharpening. Funny forget to break in the diamond plates with something you don't care as much about, and to wipe off the tool between plates during the break in. This is so no loose, coarser, diamond is transferred to a finer plate. I sharpened an old chisel, and considered it broken in.

Geoffrey Wilson

This is perfect. I'm even working ON my garage shop today so it's the right setting. I just ordered some sharpening plates and had a question: Should I get the rolling bevel gauge until I get the muscle memory, or just try freehand sharpening from the start?

Sam Marcum

Will try and sneak it in at work lol

Karl Weuste

I would love to, but can't 😭

Thomas Hverring

Looking forward to it. Already have the reminder set and sitting on your home YT page. Will you be having any formats you want for asking questions?
