Free Plans: The Joiner's Bench

Friends:

Everyone gets free plans this week, but I thought I'd post them here for your convenience.

New video Saturday!

Free Plans: The Joiner's Bench

I think whatever you can do to get it done is a good idea. If that's the wood you've got, then use it! The top is easy to replace later if you need to. Please post pics when you can!

Hi Rex, i am in the middle of building the joiners bench, and have been using mostly scrap wood that I have laying around. I have almost finished building the frame, but with the lockdown, I won't have the chance to get to a box store and get some 2 x 10s for the top. I do have a bunch of scrap pallet laying around, but the boards on these pallets are not long enough to go stretch the length of the bench. What do you think about building the top of the bench with lots of smaller boards that stretch between the aprons? Would doing this be a bad idea??

James P Wirth

I think that would work great!

ANFSCD - instead of a log section to use as a chopping block, (hard to find for some city-dwellers) how about nine ~30" pieces of 4x4 glued together on end in a 3x3 configuration. I'm planning one to do double duty - I have a 12" piece of railroad track, and will have two 6" lengths of 1" pipe welded to the bottom of it, to slip into matching holes drilled into the top of the 4x4 stack ( which will be 12x12 when it's put together). I may need to wrap strapping around it to reinforce it, but probably not. That will give me a chopping block/stool/anvil - or a humongous paper weight to hold down a set of plans! :-)

I've got some of the pieces cut for it, but do you think it would be prone to racking that much if I were to replace the front diagonals with a half-lap mounted 2x6 straight across, so I can have a shelf under the bench? I do still lack sufficient storage, and I thought maybe that might give me more space. Also, I'm wondering about the crochet. Instead of mounting it permanently, how about affixing it to a tapered block, that would slide into a matching cutout in the face panel? Make a second, filler, block that would give you a clean face on there when you don't need the crochet attached. Just a thought.

They don't exist yet since I'm still making videos about the bench. When they're done, I'll post them here on the morning the final video comes out. Right now, I'm still drawing them.

Rex Krueger

I use Gramercy holdfasts. Love them. I totally added blocking to my top to make it thicker for holdfasts. I wouldn't bother edge-jointing the top planks. I don't think you'd even notice.

Rex Krueger

How do I find those plans?

DAVID FALK

I just had to get these plans ready fast. These are the free ones, so they don't have as much detail as the final ones will have.

Rex Krueger

Yup. None of those things are on the free plans. But they will be on the final, deluxe plans, which my Patrons will also receive for free.

Rex Krueger

I don't see a parts list, or a purchase list, or a items list.

DAVID FALK

Hey Rex. New follower here...looking forward to some of the future refinements to the bench, since I think I want to build it in my shop, but have refinement ideas of my own and I want to see how anyone else adjusts theirs first, to steal their ideas too. BTW - I'm left handed so thinking I might reverse the position of all the added vices and such. I that pretty common?

Paul Thoma

Hey! I've been lurking for a while, but this is the first time I've actually looked at a set of plans. You mention in the video that you had the 2x10s cut to length in the big-box store. You also mention in the video that this project used "2 4x4s, 2 2x10s, and 3 2x4s", but I don't see that in the plans. I could likely figure out how that lays out between the pattern and the video, but I was surprised that there wasn't a materials or cut list included with the plans. I'm pretty green, though. Was that left out deliberately because of some kind of variability or flexibility I'm meant to use on my own, or was I not meant to expect such a thing in woodworking plans in general? I'm not 100% sure I'd trust my inexperience to map it out the way you intended, even though there are only a few pieces.

Christopher Vollick

I've got the parts mostly all cut out - going with 36" legs, because I'm 6'2" and need to stand more upright - bending hurts! :-) Also thought about the holdfasts (where did you get yours?) -- Anyway, what do you think about gluing/screwing a few of those leftover 4x4 pieces to the underside of the top? You'd need to make allowances for the vise, etc, but that shouldn't be a problem. I think I'll try it. Also, would it make any difference to dress the edges of the planks for the top? Plane or saw them as if for a glue joint, but assemble them dry.

Howard Tuckey

I had to google "ensuite basin"! But I see how someone could use a bench for that. Very interesting. Building a bench is a GREAT reason to get that shop in order.

Rex Krueger

I’m planning on building one, but my garage workshop will need some rearranging first! Remarkably, the ensuite basin in our house (installed by previous owners) sits on a upcycled antique workbench with a lot of similarities. It must have also had a centrally located vice. It was quaint when we moved in. Now I smile every time I go to the bathroom and look at it now. I’ll share a photo when I work out how.

Tony Papenfuss

I’m definitely going to build one.

Scott Benjamin

Thank you so much, Rex. Can’t wait to make this!

Larry

I need to fix that. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Thanks Rex. spotted a spelling mistake; the heading "Tressles" should be "Trestles".
