Early Access Video: Making the Gun-Stock War Club

Okay, I did it.

Finally.

Many of you saw my recent Patreon video where I talked about the hunt for perfection and the struggles I was having finishing this gun-stock club. This thing has been trouble since the word go and I have sweated every detail.

In the middle of it, I found out that the amazing Green Beetle was going to make the blade and I rushed to finish the club and ship it off to him, but he pointed out some very real problems with the finish and sent it back to me.

So I refinished the whole thing and then spent a day sanding and polishing the top-coat. That day was yesterday, and when I was done, I still had to take the final shots and do the edit. It's been crazy.

But it's done.

How is it? Well, I'll let you be the judge, but I'm pretty happy. I think the video came out pretty well.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Well, that's a typo on my part. @furniture_makers. I'm dyslexic. Sigh.

Rex Krueger

At least I was leading the bid for a couple of hours! Looking forward to seeing how much you guys raise!

A1BASE

Nitpick: I cannot find any @furnuiture_makers on Instagram, looks like a typo? :) The rest of the video is beautiful as always!

Daniel Bohrer

Actually it was half joking half not. I couldn't help myself wonder how natives doing it without not even power tools but also without hand planes, glue or so. I have watched a video before about traditional boomerang making and as Rex said, they were mostly using good branches with the right crook... I don't have instragram account, and I don't want to have one. If there are youtube or website links that you can send me about traditional gun club making, I'll be very happy to watch some. :)

Ahmet Çınar

You're very kind. I'm just being realistic about how things work. People with bigger channels can be hard to reach. This time, it was no trouble.

Rex Krueger

That is VERY generous! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Good question! I think they started with more sensible wood choices, like a good branch with the right crook naturally in the wood.

Rex Krueger

I feel like being honest about setbacks is the least I can do. I'm really glad you like the project.

Rex Krueger

Rex, I probably have about 3 meltdowns on average per project. One of the reasons your channel gets me back out in the shop is the way you share not just your difficulties, but also your problem solving process. Your teaching background really shines through. This piece is beautiful. Thanks for showing us the whole process!

Nic Beurskens

I know you're joking. But, if you haven't checked out some of the Native American and First Nations work on Instagram, you're missing out! There are a tone of talented people keeping traditional work alive and putting their own artistic spins into new designs out there. 😁

Nic Beurskens

How were the natives doing this without power tools or super glues? :)

Ahmet Çınar

Pretty sure this’ll go for far more, but I’ll start you off at 500.

A1BASE

Dude! Rex! Your work is amazing! Your woodworking skills, your teaching skills, all of it. The number of subscribers you have has nothingh to do with it.

WhatMeWorry

And I'm very happy to have you as a supporter!

Rex Krueger

Rex, I think you will be surprised at the price this goes for. Exclent work on the weapon and excellent work on your videos. Happy to be one of your supporters.

Paul J Schneider

You are more correct than I'd like to admit.

Rex Krueger

Howard, you're a PRINCE. That auction will be up early this week. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

80% of any decent woodworking project is finishing. Days and days of sanding.

A1BASE

WOW! You actually brought a lump to my throat, and a tear to my eye! St Jude's Childrens' Hospital is by far my favorite charity! Thank you and Green Beetle so much for creating then donating this work of art to help support them! It's an amazing thing to do! I'll be happy to start the bidding at $50 - a little more than I can afford right now, and nowhere near what the thing is worth, but I'll do it!
