Early Access Video: What is a Spindle Gouge?

Friends:

This week, I'm bringing out the next installment in my series on basic woodturning tools. A lot of turners struggle with understanding gouges. What is a gouge? What kind do I need? There's the spindle gouge, the bowl gouge, and the roughing gouge? Do I need all three? Can I use a roughing gouge on a bowl?

These are good questions and knowing the answers won't just make you a better turner, it will also keep you safe. Using the wrong gouge can cause a hazard in the shop.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Also, for whatever reason, the URL slug for that whole page was set to "new-blog" instead of articles. It's fixed, but it was a pain.

I just did it too - I swapped the links! New-blog is for the, well, new-blog creation page, vs. articles is for the view blog page.

It looks like you are copying the create address to the tool sheet (while you are still creating the page - hence the \new-blog path in the URI) instead of the address to view the article (containing \articles in the URI). This also happened with the 3 tool mallet video just posted, where the link is https://www.rexkrueger.com/articles/2019/2/24/tip-sheet-make-a-mallet-with-3-tools, but the actual page appears to be https://www.rexkrueger.com/new-blog/2019/2/24/tip-sheet-make-a-mallet-with-3-tools. I do this more than I would like to admit when authoring/editing multiple wiki pages at work. :D

I meant to plug the spindle gouge sheet, but realized too late that the image I stuck in the video is the parting tool sheet. These details get out of hand really fast. I need an assistant. As to the articles link, I have NO idea what happened there. It's fixed, but now I probably have about a million broken links to go fix. Thanks SO MUCH for catching this. I don't know what I'd do without my Patrons.

Another proofreading thing (sorry this is after you published)... it looks like rexkrueger.com/articles which you mention in the video doesn't work anymore (the Articles link in your header now goes to /new-blog). Did you mean to plug the tip sheet for the parting tool or spindle gouge?

Tim Hatch

James: You are entirely right! I just wanted to get this video up for Patrons, but I do need to get those link in there. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Hey Rex. Great video. I want to remind you before the video is published you say links to "a couple of better videos in the description... [to] show you all the nuances of coves and beads" but the links are currently missing.
