Early Acess Video: 4 Reasons to Own a Bit-Brace

Friends:

Do you own a bit-brace?

No?

I don't blame you. They seem a bit, well...ridiculous. I know that many of us love our hand-tools, but we're not stupid. I buy my lumber planed; I own a nice table saw. I'm not out to make more work for myself. When I need to drill a hole, I reach for my powerful, lightweight cordless drill. It powers through any material with minimum fuss.

So why own a silly old bit brace?

I'll give you four reasons:

1.) Cost

2.) No electricity

3.) Incredible sensitivity

4.) Easy depth gauging

Still not convinced? Watch the video. I might change your mind.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. It's 17 degrees in Northern Ohio, but I'm still taking my daughter for ice cream this afternoon. Suck it, winter!

I found 2 of this treasueres in the workshop of my late grandfather. One simple and one with ratchet plus a handful of drills. Works everytime I nee a hole larger 10mm when my cordless drill won't do it.

I standard bit brace chuck should fit square and hex shank bits. If not, you can look for a brace with a Universal chuck, which grips everything. There is no adapter that I'm aware of.

Rex, I found the drill in an antique store and in tbt process of restoring it. I noticed the drill bits are different from the hex but head, how can I get the drill to use the hex heads? Is there an adapter?

I had an old friend of mine give me two of those along with 6 bits for it. I build a simple stand to hold them and let them be a conversation piece. But now I think I need to clean and sharpen them up. Thanks for the video!

That makes a lot of sense. I work with plastics a fair bit and I've always struggled with the heat from drilling.

I have an eggbeater drill I use for soft, heat sensitive materials like plastics

Cleaning out my in-law's basement I ended up with a bit brace. I kept it for nostalgia's sake, but now I might have to look at using it. :)
