So, it's been a week. I cut my finger on my saw, I fell through my basement steps, and some kid threw up on my daughter at school. On top of that, I do run a custom furniture business and my customers want their stuff. So, I'm a bit behind on my videos. But here we are with part 2 of my easy smoothing plane series.

The ironic thing about these planes is that they are easy to build, but they're not easy to make videos about. There are a lot of steps and some of them need a lot of detail. So the video I started 2 weeks ago is now a 3 part series that's going to clock in at just under an hour. I think the military calls this "mission creep."

Anyway, the plane is a great project, even if you can afford a good plane. You learn a lot about how your tools work by making them. It's also a lot of fun.

softwood will not work. You can use almost any hardwood, but it needs to be pretty hard. I'm also doing another plane build next month, so you might want to wait on that!

Rex Krueger

Does the wood used to make the plan have to be hard wood or would soft wood work?

I am new to patreon and not sure how patreon works. What’s the best way to get the most out patreon?

Jim Schultz

with a bevel-down, single-iron plane (which is what I built), the whole blade is free to fall through the mouth, but that's not really a measure of the correct mouth. What you want is to keep track of the distance between the blade edge and edge of the front block. This distance is the true "mouth" of the plane. For a smoother like this, the finished plane should have a very tight mouth, certainly 1/16th or less. A jack would have a bigger mouth, a scrub, bigger still. Hope that makes sense!

The escapement is the part of the plane that the shavings come out through. They "escape" through it. Good question. I should have been more clear in the video.

Looks good! I’m slightly uncertain about determining the throat gap. Does the blade edge peek through or should the whole blade be able to fall through the gap? I didn’t know about that salt tip. Very interesting.

Barbara Schulz

What is an escapement block?

Alex Larson

Yes, the text overlay definitely helps. at least in my opinion :)

Hey George, thanks for catching that wobbly saw thing. I decided that you were right and I was going to get killed in the comments, so I just added a text overlay to tell the peanut gallery that I've already fixed the wobble. It's actually really helpful to "test" these videos with my Patrons prior to releasing them. Y'all have sharp eyes.

Rex Krueger

Man, I know about the saw. I should add a note about it. It only wobbles in the ONE place in the shop.

Rex Krueger

Excellent Video. thanks, Rex. Good to see you working after all the mishaps :) one small thing - your table saw looks a bit wobbly, so be ready for those comments once it goes live, especially after that last video you made about it. cheers! and looking forward to the part 3!
