Roland TD-7 MIDI Drum Sound Module

This thing caught my eye at a thrift store sitting behind some DVD players. I'm really glad I found it because it turned out to be pretty cool!

There are recordings of music in this video that I did by holding the mic up to a speaker. I think it turned out mostly okay but it's not stereo or 100% representative of the final audio. I think it's good enough though, I didn't really think about it until after I had to whole video almost completely edited. If it doesn't work, let me know and I can go back and do some line level recordings. My hardware for that hasn't been the most cooperative lately though so if I can avoid that I would prefer it.

Also, I mention I have some extra videos on the second channel at the end of this. I don't have those ready yet so I'll post here again when those are done.

UPDATE:
I decided to trim the video down a bit more. I cut out about 5m and really nothing was lost: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SRfspq5j2s

The extra music recordings from the video are ready now as well:

Comments

It's really wide on the other side of the piezo, I think that's going to be less sensitive on the other side. Plus there's the thick wires soldered there so it won't make as good contact. But that's interesting to know that about piezos.

Tech Tangents

This will sound crazy, but depending on how it's deforming the crystal, you may be able to reverse the polarity for piezos by flipping them over.

Kadah

Hearing the more-realistic drums from the TD-7 with the SC-55 for the other instruments in Doom is kind of trippy.
