I work for a non-profit arts center in Missouri and I know exactly what you mean. It's infuriating. Right now, we're bending over backwards to convince the city to give a small chunk of money every year out of their budget, (which is literally not even a fraction of their budget), so that we can continue to operate when they spend thousands of dollars to throw a party for the mayor and her wealthy friends. And the thing is, the money give us doesn't get spent on anything other than bills and building upkeep, it doesn't get spent on any events or salaries or anything like that. We're the only hub of arts & culture in the town and some people have this mentality like "well, how does it benefit the city if it doesn't make the city money?" It brings culture and art to the community that otherwise wouldn't have access to cool things like art exhibitions locally. It's so ridiculous. That's why I give money to people like Austin, who make great and hilarious entertainment for all of us for hardly anything reward in return, so that they can continue to do what they are passionate about because it's awesome.
