Orb: On the Movements of the Earth 1x17 "I Could Make a Lot of Money with This Book... Maybe" - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 17 of Orb!! Oh wow guys, I don't know what to think! We've got our main protagonist for this part, and she's got some fair points about stuff....and it's interesting to see someone who's all about the payday vs. all the motivations we've seen on this show to date lol. But in terms of who's got their belief system "right"...so far no one's making a good case lol, as this uncle was such a JERK!!! What the heck, selling her out like that! Is she gonna try to sell the book as a thought-provoking fiction or something?! Can't wait for more! Enjoy! ~ MH

Things are definitely going in a direction I didn’t think it would. When I read the title I was thinking making money off of this was coming from a selfish greedy place but it makes sense how fear or uncertainty leads people to certain things to feel at ease. I was unsure if the protagonist was female or not. I saw eyelashes in the opening and assumed female but I wasn’t sure till uncle said he had someone to offer for Antoni. Oof uncle— I thought that was Nowak too last episode because well I mean come on who else could it have been at that point. And now that uncle is not even remotely what I thought he was by the end. Man what an awful thing. Great reaction!

Ok cool, I'm glad it wasn't just me wondering about Draka! I hate to assume lol. Yeah it was interesting to present capitalism in this way / setting. Right, communism has a lot of connotations in our modern world but the basic premise was something along these lines. That's true, in his own way, the uncle kinda has nothing to lose...but like dang, I know atheists and they wouldn't sell out their own family! I'm wondering that too, how is there another copy of the book? Did Badeni or Jolenta copy it?! I noticed the rope after :(((( I mean, I can see how no one is really "good" or "bad" here, but even with Badeni....when it came down to it, he couldn't stand to see his friend hurt. He didn't want Jolenta hurt. He tried to do something good by Grabowski. He ended up "caving" on a lot of his harsher "morals" and was actually a more caring person than he originally seemed. So I'd say he was good :) But yeah, there's flaws in any person, structure, concept, etc. I can't wait to see which guesses I got right or wrong lol!

Neither of the new characters have any standout roles I can bring to your attention as a reference this time. Draka is a girl, yes, and her character design threw a lot of people for a loop until they actually confirmed it in the dialogue. What’s more interesting is her capitalistic ideals and how they point out both the pluses, and minuses, of the society a decent amount of us live in. It’s been quite a while since I saw it in class, but the nomad lifestyle might be a reflection of communism - that is a word that was highly shunned in this country for a while because of its link with the Axis Powers during WW2. But the basic premise it started with was that nobody should live above or below anyone else - everything was to distribute equally. Which, apparently, caused some people to not work as hard, so we see the issues on that side of the fence as well. The uncle is, a piece of work, but at the same time, I don’t think he ever actually lied about his intentions - he did, however, withhold certain details, especially leading up to the last scene. Also his “magic spells” are part of the reason Draka is so jaded and obsessed with money, it got her thinking that’s the only thing in life that will give her peace. That’s kind of a messed up thing to do to a kid, the more I think about it. Either way, he’s clearly an atheist, so it’s not surprising he’s pulling something like this - if you don’t believe in an afterlife, what’s to stop you from worrying that anything you do to survive in this life is punishable? Belief in God, as we’ve been covering, also has a side effect of being a “guiding conscience” for a lot of people as far as their decision making process, and he has no such qualms. You’re forgetting to ask a question: Badeni burned the only copy of Oczy’s book. So how is Draka reading another copy? The answer is something the show won’t spell out for you, so you’ll have to put some of the pieces together based on what you know. I don’t know if you’ve picked up this in the OP but there’s a hangman’s rope around Badeni’s neck when he’s looking at the sky now. “I just want a show where we can get rid of all the bad people.” Okay. Well… define “bad.” Is it someone looking out for their own interests? Like the uncle, or Antoni? Then you have to throw in Badeni. Is it someone who kills others? Sure that takes out Nowak, but it also kills Oczy. The term “bad” is really all about the perception of the person involved. No one person is completely bad, or completely flawless - it’s part of being human, just like the juxtaposition between capitalism and communism was being presented earlier. It’s a little harder to play judge, jury and executioner when you’re only being presented with the on screen facts and not everything else. I suppose, then… the only thing you can put any stock in is karma? Everyone’s actions trigger a reaction at some point. I can’t tell you what you’ve gotten right so far, that would spoil the fun… but remember it’s not as easy as “this person is great” and “this person is awful” - the truth is always somewhere in the middle for everyone. :)
