"is it relevant?" Part of an appeal of procedurals, army shows, spy shows, medical show, travel shoes etc etc is an exposure to an exciting otherworld where regular people, and especially teenagers have no access. Kids love to explore the world and learn stuff from those shows. You can call it "adding details about the world" or "Wikipedia included". This is the main selling point of the authors like Jules Verne and Tom Clancy. The Wheel Of Time is notorious for throwing in ephemeral plot lines that are absolutely irrelevant to anything and are forgotten next chapter, just to show the society details on an example
