I will try to avoid paying attention to his past politics and anti-semitic statements. He was always a good poet and musician. And, like many musicians of fifty years ago, he is trying to recapture some of that fame from that time and still be relevant.
I appreciate his transmittal of feeling into his songs, but, the upper register here (as you say, portraying the younger man) just sounds strained. I feel he would be better served getting a young man to duet this with him. I feel it would have so much more impact.
