The Scandinavian peoples invaded, occupied, and settled parts of England. There were also multiple conflicts between the Norse settlers and the Anglo-Saxon people who had previously settled what is now The UK. That all said the writer/artist of Vinland Saga does take a lot of liberties for story telling sake. A few of the characters are real people as well, but again lots of liberties taken.
