i just joined your patreon so you probably already know this by now since this video is old but most of bts cover songs they do are actually remakes the chorus or beat would be the same as the original artist but theyll write their own lyrics/verses for it so for too much the chorus was drake song too much but all the rap parts were rm's own lyrics. or for like born singer the instrumental is originally by j cole his song born sinner but bts rewrote the entire lyrics of the song from verses to born singer chorus instead of born sinner. they do that often. sometimes though they keep it the same like jungkook covering harry styles song fallin he didnt change the lyrics there. so it really depends on what bts/the member covering decides to do if they wanna write new lyrics, change the beat or keep it the same. they do this as a way to vent or even just to practice their crafts like lyric writing, melody writing, production or just singing/rapping theyre always unpredictable they used to only do covers and remakes but over the years have been releasing full new songs that theyve made from scratch like V's winter bear for example.

Ah - I forgot. Some of these songs were "homework" assignments given to them by Big Hit during their trainee days to practice making songs. For "Like a Star", RM explains years later that this song is actually a homework assignment given him to make a song about a friend. Apparently, he was hanging out with his friend who started the conversation by saying, "my life was so grey", which RM found fascinating and wrote this song based on that line. So these songs are short because they are practice/pre-debut/etc. None of them are for selling or making money or anything; just practice and putting their sound out there.

About the "Too Much" song -- https://genius.com/Rm-too-much-lyrics -- according to the genius translators, a tv producer heard this song and cried. He was then moved to make a tv documentary about idols, one episode of which was dedicated to RM. Clips of that episode are included in Rise of Bangtan, so no need to go watch the whole episode. However, basically , he's not only struggling with his own identity, but he lost a lot of his friends when he became an idol because his friends were in the underground rap scene. Several of them actually joined Big Hit as part of BTS after and then left -- whether voluntarily or were eliminated, it isn't clear. Probably some of both. They were supposed to debut in 2011 as a hip hop group together, before Big Hit decided to make an idol group instead and then his friends left/were eliminated. Only Suga and J-Hope were left from that initial crew. He was a trainee from 15-18 years old, so imagine losing friends and identity during that time of your life. He says later that he regrets this song because it isn't good rapping because there is too much emotion in it and he's trying to cram too much in (apparently his pronunciation wasn't very clear? I don't speak Korean, but that's what Korean rappers called him out for on this track). But for me (and clearly you!) and that tv producer and so many people who have heard it and cried --- it contains SO much of his heart and his emotions and thought processes. So I love it too. I'm glad you spent so much time on it. I think this track really highlights how amazing his lyricism is, which only becomes better and better as the years go by.

Ooh, wait till you see the Danger choreo :D! Yeah as an amateur dancer (just flash mobs and fitness classes) their choreo is ridiculous. There's also complexity in where they stand in the formation, that constantly changes, so that's another variable on top of the choreo that they have to remember.

I’m baby army so I also haven’t heard these songs, thank u to your squad for the recommendations! I’m so happy you’re reacting to the dance practice videos. Like what RM said in the My Universe documentary, while some bands perform with instruments, Bangtan does it with dance. I’m not a dancer but their dance practice vids are what drew me to them. It’s all so satisfying to watch. Btw, just to answer your question: American Hussle Life is a hiphop reality series BTS did while recording their album Dark and Wild. Another challenge that BTS faced (because unlike the big 3, Big Hit had no significant clout back then to negotiate) was their lack of opportunity to appear on tv shows, radio guestings, etc. Because no one was giving them the time of day, BTS essentially had to circumvent the system and make their own shows. They found a way to reach out to the audience despite the industry gate keeping air time and that’s what AHL, Run BTS, Bon Voyage, In the Soop are. I’m so excited to watch the rest of the Rise of Bangtan series with you. Sorry I can’t catch the livestream coz of the time difference but I’m glad you also upload it. Thanks Jim! :)

Great reaction. Alot of those songs I haven't heard before.

Thank you I was a bit confused by that part. It makes perfect sense. All these movements are calculated so even mic placement matters

Just to let you know, like with the 'performance practice', they always 'overdub' during dance practices. It's because they are practicing for the dance. A 'performance practice' is them practicing for a particular performance, usually an award show or special event. They will perform it live, but they need to practice the dancing before they practice the dancing with the singing/rapping. They are not trying to look like they are singing/rapping live. When they have microphones or look like they are singing/rapping during the dance practices, they are just practicing with the actual song playing in the studio.

got to love BTS guys ^_^ in A Typical Trainee’s Christmas they complain about their company, in Cyphers they drag their haters and then there is Pied piper when they tease us ARMY ^_^

Hi, just something I noticed on one of your videos last week, you listened to the song and then read the lyrics out loud on doolsets page. I think doing it that way takes away the flow of the song itself and a lot of people (reactors) usually listen to the song at the same time as them reading the lyrics. What I’ve seen someone do is they’ll play the song once to get the sound and vibe of it and then when they go in to read the lyrics, they’ll play the song again and do their best to follow along on doolsets page. That way the flow is messed up and it just goes better that way. Otherwise it’s kinda awkward in my opinion haha. Another thing that I’ve seen a reactor do (which I think is very helpful) is that they plan out the songs they want to listen to and they ask their followers to link the best lyric video or color coded video there is and that way they go by the majority and they react to that video. So you’ll know the source is reliable and you’ll be able to listen to the song whilst reading the lyrics. Just something to think about :))

Thanks for taking the time to share that with me. I guess that's why so many people recommend doolset lyrics. The other reactor's comment was because a few of them have reached out to me. I tend to stay away from most of them unless they pop into my discord.

Allow me to give you some background information on (color-coded) lyric videos: They aren't made by BTS or their company but either by fans (especially in the old days) or, more commonly now, by people who basically want to make money off BTS. There are numerous lyric videos for each song with the quality of the lyric translation varying widely. So the number of views on lyric videos can be fairly random. But of course you're right that many of these Soundcloud pre-/early debut songs are a lot less known, especially by non-Korean fans. Nowadays when BTS releases a song, the lyric videos are up within 30 minutes in order to generate the highest possible view numbers; obviously translations can't be good that way, which is the reason why so many fans are very critical of them. Often the fewer views a lyric video has the better it probably is because that means the creator took their time making it and didn't upload it right after the song release. The people who make lyric videos in order to make money put anything BTS have ever sung on YouTube. So if one of them sings for 20 seconds on a livestream where he chats with ARMY, that will end up on YouTube as a lyric video. Making money off BTS is basically an industry. So it's really not easy to know which lyric videos are reliable and which aren't, especially if you're new to BTS. Anyway, thanks for being so curious and willing to learn! It's really nice to follow your journey. (By the way, I don't see the point in you getting in touch with other BTS/K-pop reactors; I'd prefer to see your personal reaction and journey without anybody's influence...)
