Houdini Cloud Lighting Baker (Redshift version)

Updated version v4...

Build on top of the original light baker here...

Change log:

- Well it's build to work with Redshift, the delay was due to the lack of colored volume grid support but as of v 2.6.25 it's supported. It's blazing fast and stable as you can see.

- I've been asked to add a shadow caster support, and I got you covered, while it's not the fastest thing to compute but in some cases it will save alot of time specially if your object is static.

- Also I used here the SOP level packed primitives instancing support by Redshift v2.6.27, it's a savior so no need to add that object level instancing thing.

- Some optimization when creating the vec3 color grid.

- It feels snappier in H17 compared to H16.5.

Note:

- The speed of the video is x2 so you dont fall asleep.

- I used 1070 and 1080 to render.

- cooking time before rendering was cropped just a couple of seconds until everything is loaded to the gpus.

Comments

The point here is we are optimizing the light backing so less points means faster response, and vdbVisualize will give and exact number of the voxels which is big compared to scatter. You reminded me to update this, this was an old setup and I did some improvements, it works now without the points part.

Any reasons why you choose to use the scatter node to generate points rather than vdbVisualizeTree?

mmm can you double check please because it's working for me. I used the same file cache node at the end and saved a test.vdb file then used load from disk and all the info and color grid are there. I even went further and hit render and everything works as expected.

Hey there, I seem to be having a rather odd problem. If I render within the node stream the render works just fine but if I write the vdb out to disk and read it back in none of the color information is kept for the volume. I've double checked that on export and import the vdb grid for Cd is present. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, however I need to be able to transport these clouds to Maya for rendering and I can't even to get a basic re-import working. Any thoughts?

You are most welcome.

Thank you!
