As near as I can tell from social media, every person in the world is jaw-droppingly inspired by The Mandalorian and trailers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Me too.
I also have spent the last couple of weeks doing mind-numbing technical work trying to get a computer to work properly. It's work that constantly interrupts the flow of my writing for Delta Green. But it doesn't interfere as much with writing game mechanics.
So I made a Star Wars game.
I have played literally every Star Wars RPG ever published, and in different ways none of them felt quite right to me. First and foremost, the intense mechanical details of action scenes always felt too heavy. They demand deep attention and thought. A Star Wars fight on the screen is over in a flash. At the table, it eats up hours. West End Games' classic Star Wars RPG is far quicker and easier to play than most, but stat and skill scores often don't match up well with the target numbers for challenges.
Don't get me wrong. I have had a blast playing all of them. But that's been despite the rules, not because of them. That's my experience, anyway.
So! STARWALKERS is my concept for a Star Wars RPG that's meant to play as fast as the action on screen. It's meant to capture the ever-rising stakes of the films, and their sense of the power of sacrifice and emotional revelation.
I didn't write rules for vehicles and robots and all kinds of other stuff yet. If the game is fun, I might work those up.
I have not yet played this game. It might be a train wreck. But I like the way it looks, so I hope it holds up. Give it a shot and tell me what it's like.
