bob is right-once you make something + put it out to the public, you have no control about the reactions you receive but the comments from ethel cain sound like they are asking for genuine reactions to their creations instead of the same humorous responses over + over- I don't know this artist, but wanting to hear people's honest opinions about how they are perceived is valid and probably hard to get once you get popular

Yes I think you both are hitting on something in regards to waiting and being allowed to make art about tragedy. There was a whole thing with Evan Peters & Ross Lynch where people felt like the more than one show was in some way glorifying what he did - to your point Bob. There’s no right or wrong answer here just as art is subjective so too is this answer imo.

I think there’s two similar but ultimately different convos going on here. I interpreted what Ethel Cain is talking about as venting about how many people seem to engage with art lately. Like no one wants to be earnest in liking, engaging, or commentating on art so it gets buried in comments like “mother” or “pov: watching mother slay.” It’s less about people misinterpreting art, and more about missing meaningful engagement with it. The other convo is about making art in relation to tragedy or something horrific. It’s always “allowed.” Visual art especially often depicts/discusses tragedies in a way to try and evoke empathy and feeling. But when it comes to how well it is or isn’t received, there’s a lot of factors. I think it really just depends on things like the artists intent, the execution of it (skill), how critical or nuanced the audience is willing to be, etc.

In defense of the people vs Ethel Cain, I think a lot of people (especially young people) try not to take things seriously because we've experienced too many traumatic and serious sequences in our lives. With shootings, the pandemic, economic crashes, climate change, society's adjustment to social media, the world is extremely exhausting and depressing and sometimes the way people cope with reality (speaking for myself) is to generally not take things too seriously and joke about things. Obviously time and place, but I think Ethel's stance honestly comes from a place of privilege, meaning that she comes from a place of wealth and comfort and is able to not take things too seriously on a daily basis because she can afford to, whether it be time or money. I mean not to sound cringy but RuPaul always lauding about how its better to not take life too seriously, except when it comes to love, has made my life exponentially more enjoyable. Just my opinion!

i’m an avid ethel cain listener and i think what she’s referencing is the “twitter humor” postmodern stan culture of fangirling so hard but wanting to be cool about it so they code it by saying things like “you ate that like …” or “POV: …” in reference to their art which she holds so dearly. i also agree with bob that it’s naive to not expect people to respect your art in a different way than you intend them to- but i understand why her perfect album would be so important to her. highly recommend.

If this is going to be anything like I expect it to be, Drag Race SA will be exquisitely chaotic and dramatic. One thing: love Bebe. For the international fandom that would make a lot of sense. I'm skeptical of the South African reception of that idea though. Because South Africans are complicated and maybe, sometimes, slightly, a little bit, possibly xenophobic re other Africans (to any SAns reading this: sorry, but s'true) so Bebe would be an interesting pick. I'm getting Chidimma flashbacks (look that up at your own peril). The UK queen should definitely not come anywhere near it, I believe she's an expat - which South Africans also have mixed feelings about. And she's white, the host should not be white. Finish en klaar. SA has a great local drag scene, albeit with it's own super problematic history and characters, but there is a decent pool for them to choose from. SA is full of land mines though so there's a non zero possibility that hier kom kak. Let's hope all goes well 🤞
