Agreed, the number of X people in figure skating is different than saying X people are better at figure skating. The former is based on accessibility to figure skating, the latter is based on skillset. Just like saying "more X people read", versus "X people are better at reading".

I get where you’re coming from but black people not feeling pain is just undoubtedly untrue and not based in fact but racist rhetoric that has somehow continued to live on, whereas certain ethnic groups having certain physical characteristics which benefit them in sports is true. It’s the same reason why the debate of trans people in sports is so stupid because all the best athletes have a genetic advantage, so being trans shouldn’t be an issue. While it is a fine line, it would be obtuse to ignore the fact that the majority of the successful athletes in the world are black. But that doesn’t mean those characteristics should be used to dehumanise us. Two things can be true but it doesn’t make the other one justifiable

The michel Phelps example is specific to him. Not all white people have that advantage. While I don't think Monet was inferring anything harmful by saying it, it IS a harmful idea that has had multiple massive negative effects on various communities. Rhetoric like, black people don't feel pain as much, or this disgusting idea of "excited delirium" that has been applied to mostly black people who die when in police custody. That they are genetically predisposed to aggression, agitation, and sudden death. It's a problematique take but not intintended on Monet's part. Money / access is a large part of the equation, Edhead below has a very good comment talking about just that. Privileged white people are "better" because they kept out even the potential of other people attempting to come into these sports by making them so exclusive / prohibitively expensive.

Also Bob, figure skating is predominantly white because it’s an elitist (and pretty racist) sport icl. Same as ballet and previously tennis (which is why Serena and Venus got such hate), a sport being exclusionary to minorities is different to white people being better at that sport.

I do think that being good at sports is heavily due to genetic advantage. I don’t think it’s negative to point it out. Michael Phleps is an amazing swimmer due to his crazy arm span. East Africans make good long distance runners because of living in a region with high altitude. So team monetion stay being right 🫡.

I definitely understand the implications that come with the “black ppl are genetically better at sports” debate however, there is some scientific proof that black people are usually more athletic than their counterparts. However, this has nothing to do with the ridiculous “black people don’t feel pain” rhetoric because obviously this statement isn’t true. That being said, white ppl may be seen as “dominating” figure skating, but that’s likely because black people don’t really figure skate. This doesn’t make white people better at the sport, it just means they’re the vast majority participating in it. If there were an even number of white people and black people figure skating, I do think that black people would likely be better at it. But love you bothhhh and love the pod 🫶🏾

However Romanian team said they didn’t appeal in time (which was later proven false) so the medal was stripped. They are still trying to get the ruling over turned. Also Bob in gymnastics All- Around is when the gymnast compete in each apparatus and combine their total scores for each, whereas individual is just doing that one apparatus. Simone also has five namesake moves, one for each apparatus except bars (for now)

there are a lot of factors to who becomes professional athletes but I think access is a big one. for example figure skating takes way more money, time, and resources than say soccer so it becomes more niche. even recreationally, most people would be more likely to have played soccer/basketball/baseball than to have figure skated or played golf.

I think there’s a lot of things that come into play with the sport debate. I agree with Bob that a huge part of it is cultural and imo an even bigger part is financial. Regardless of race the richest countries win more events and the more a country invests in a particular sport, the more they win. i dont think koreans are genetically better at archery they just invest a lot in that sport. Black people (in america and the UK and other european countries) excel in particular sports which are often much more financially accessible and culturally ingrained like athletics/track, football and soccer, basketball etc. which require less money to be able to participate in, are more present in urban and deprived areas etc etc Sports like figure skating and gymnastics historically require a lot of financial investment and commitment from family and parents to facilitate competing at a very high level. The space and facilities required for an elite gymnastics club are very limiting and people move big distances to live near a particular gymnastics club. And canada or alpine countries are historically going to excel at skiing or ice skating over eg african countries for very obvious reasons which are definitely not genetic… Here in the UK there are whole sports which are essentially dominated by the upper and middle classes like cricket or hockey or an extreme case would be equestrian sports compared to sports like boxing or football which are more dominated by working class athletes. Other cultural and historical effects come into play eg almost exclusively ex british colonial countries play and excel at cricket like india, australia, and west indian countries. So i would be reeeeeaaally careful about generalising the effect of race in sport
