My mother has a PhD in sociology, and she will tell you that race, ethnicity, and nationality are not the same. There can be overlap depending on the situation, but each is it's own separate thing.
2023-02-05 13:52:21 +0000 UTCI joined Patreon just to make this comment. Bob, there is a BIG line in the Sand when it comes to ballroom and Drag Race. It’s because of drag race you have people running around using in correct Termanology like death drop and Shblam. True Baldwin girls like myself do not like or respect RuPaul. She’s made so much money over the years misappropriating our culture. Michelle was a respected girl but that died when she let the foolery you see today on that show continue. It’s so infuriating!! Real ballroom girls do not like it.
2023-02-05 02:49:10 +0000 UTCMy sentiments exactly. Like what do you mean controversial? This is real life not some random edgy topic.
2023-02-04 04:46:16 +0000 UTCI appreciate this comment so much. This was very VERY hard to listen to in its entirety. I think some ppl just shouldn’t converse about race if don’t have the range? I don’t know right now…it just sucks that I see the white ppl commenting “thanks for talking about controversial topics” and other folks are like this isn’t true or this made me VERY uncomfortable.

2023-02-03 20:46:28 +0000 UTCOf course! It is my hope that they revisit this conversation with more knowledge in the future. ❤️
2023-02-03 16:29:48 +0000 UTCI agree so much. I had to stop listening because it's clear they were not well too knowledgable about how to engage in this conversation! Thank you for stating what so many of us felt!! <33
2023-02-03 16:28:09 +0000 UTCThank you Brironni! This episode really hurt. I’m glad some of us are on the same page❤️
2023-02-03 15:59:47 +0000 UTC👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Agreed! This was a very rough listen. Glad to know there are other Black folks in here who get it 💕
2023-02-03 15:51:40 +0000 UTCThis episode was incredibly hard to listen to. I would implore Bob to look into the vastnesses of Black American culture. Like to insinuate that Rock wouldn’t have evolved if it wasn’t stolen by white folks is such a dangerous narrative to engage in. There is also great crossover between Black American cutler and African culture in our cuisine alone. There was an entire documentary on it (High on the Hog on Netflix). Like how can you have an entire conversation with Angela Davis and say Black people don’t have a pin pointable culture? Also, protective styles are important because black folks are STILL being legislated against in that regard. We are still being told that braid and locs are not allowed to be worn in certain institutions. I just wish there was little more education in understanding the why. This platform is so big and there is a diverse following. It is so important to be intentional in the things you say as it relates to blackness because every community deals with anti blackness. It would have been nice to hear facts aligned in this conversation.
2023-02-03 12:02:29 +0000 UTCIn regards to the gatekeeping of ballroom I love if it was possible to have both Leiomy and Deshaun Wesley on the podcast. Which both of them being icons from the scene and starting ballroom when it was still very underground to give their prospective.
2023-02-02 21:36:17 +0000 UTCI feel like Bob is almost there, but I think he’s forgetting that race, ethnicity, and nationality are all different things. Race, pertains to shared physical external features; Ethnicity, pertains to shared life and cultural experiences of a group; and Nationality, pertains to country of origin. So, you can be Racially: Black, Ethnically: Rican, and have Puerto Rican Nationality, if it’s your country of origin. So saying you are Half-Black / Half-puerto Rican isn’t wrong, because people can identify however they like.
2023-02-02 18:05:33 +0000 UTCBob, i think when someone says they're "half black + half an ethnicity" the black implies "black american", so Jax meant she's "black (american) + puerto rican". in my experience, black americans always refer to themselves as simply "black" whether it's race or ethnicity, and use it the same way when they have multiple ethnicities - "half black half chinese" "half black half italian" "i'm black and cuban" implying they're half black american. on the other hand, when someone who's black but not american or multi ethnic, they will always specify - "i'm nigerian" "half nigerian half ghanaian" "half jamaican half chinese" "i'm dominican and mexican". this is from my experience growing up in south florida in a very diverse environment.
2023-02-02 16:10:19 +0000 UTCPatreon special where monet go head to head against bob on physical activities.

2023-02-02 06:14:02 +0000 UTCMonet mentioned that cultural appropriation is a an American thing, but I wanted to pitch in cuz I think it's a bit bigger than that. I think cultural appropriation is a feeling we get when we see other people enjoying our culture when we're not allowed to enjoy our own culture ourselves. So if a white girl wears a Chinese dress to her prom, she might get praised as being exotic or cultured, but if a Chinese-American person does the same thing, they might be harassed to "go back to your country". So the local person might feel that negative feeling of cultural appropriation. But people back in China, who freely enjoy their culture, will be happy to see their culture being shared with others. In the end, I think it's a very subjective feeling, and neither the local person or the other person around the world are wrong for having those feelings. I just think people should consider their context before engaging in other cultures' traditions. I think cultural appropriation is more visible in the US because of the diversity of cultures, and the majority of them are non-dominant and not allowed to be expressed.
2023-02-02 04:26:29 +0000 UTCExactly. I hope she doesn't get any hate from the Auranators (lol). I love Bob and Monet because they can be light hearted and funny. It's disappointing their jokes get misinterpreted.

2023-02-02 02:10:42 +0000 UTCI know this isn't totally on topic but Bob, I loved your appearances on StraghtioLab and Expensive Taste Test this week! Literally so funny and I love the pro wrestling tie in with this episode of SR ❤️
