I just wanted to note that MLK Jr. worked closely with an openly gay man, Bayard Rustin - who was sidelined from major popularity because of his sexuality, but helped plan the march on Washington and even edited the famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Although MLK did eventually agree with members of the movement who thought it couldn't afford any bad publicity or fracturing Rustin might bring, he still worked with an openly gay man before and after such debates.
