I mean, not trying to attack you, but I wouldn’t equate the two as pride means very different things depending upon your race. Being Black and living in America is a lot different than being Scottish and proud in America. One’s subversive because of how your race is treated, the other isn’t because your ethnicity has been assimilated into “whiteness”. While being proud of your heritage (as long as it’s not being proud of “whiteness”) is great and an important part of anyone’s identity, I really wouldn’t compare the two when one of those heritages is under assault nearly every day in America. That’s why it’s kinda weird/funny to Black people as our pride is usually subverting cultural norms, and in that frame of reference the ethnic pride of non-systematically-disadvantaged people is kinda darkly funny. The frame of reference is vastly different, so often white people from one of the “okay” majority-White countries are kinda confused we don’t see it as fair game for anybody - for us, pride is risk. Hence the ??? on both sides IMO. One pride often carries risk and the other typically doesn’t, so for minorities used to building pride up in spite of their cultural context telling them their culture is disgusting, you get it but it’s funny because to you pride is a contrast to the thousands of messages telling you to be passive in the face of rampant discrimination and race-based trauma. Not to say Scottish people don’t have that, but in America they’re now seen as white complete with all the privilege whiteness affords, so seeing Rose constantly mention it (as opposed to Morgan peppering it in) hypothetically as much as Symone, it’s just like “yes girl, work, but also you’re good so we get it?” I get how that can seem unfair and maybe is unfair period, but please try to place this within an American context. Again, not trying to be rude! Just explaining my perspective as A Black because from where a lot of us stand, pride means something different. If Scottish people weren’t seen as white, this would be a whole different convo.
