@Monet - I work in racial equity with corporations and one year on we are working with a lot more Fortune 500 on widescale racial equity programs led by their CEOs. So yes some lip service but also some real systemic change on the up since spring 2020. Watch this space!
2021-04-26 14:14:49 +0000 UTC
on the topic of "straight" friends.... So, yes we tend to mesh well with people whom we have more in common with.... I'm one of those rare few that a lot of straight guys love to befriend me. It's off putting for a lot of straight females cause they always want to put them in the DL category. I find myself having to defend them like they are real boyfriends LOL.... They are my straight bfs per say but I have a lot of straight guy friends.... and maybe only 3 turned out to end up liking me.... my current bf LOL...

Great episode! One small request: is it possible to add a visual feed of Bob and Monet's screens where appropriate? For example, when they were discussing Dolly Parton's vaccination dress (around 8m), it would have been nice to see what they were looking at. Just a thought, love y'all!

Tag me in coach!
I seriously hate this narrative that has been created to pin Black Americans and Africans against each other! From my knowledge of African American history and African history, everything goes back to white supremacy.
The western world does not want Black Americans to connect w/ their original culture so they are brainwashed and pushed to believe that Africa is dirty and that African people don't want them or won't invite them into their countries. Africans have also been brainwashed to believe that Black Americans are dangerous, lazy and that Africans should see themselves as almost above Black Americans. These tactics have created what we see today, which is this serious divide amongst the people who should honestly be the most united. If y'all decide to bring that person on who made that comment, tag me in cause I really believe this discussion is needed.

Hey! White, cis, pansexual and poly woman here :D x Love you both.
On corporate changes, I work at Deloitte in the UK and I have seen some really positive changes including the forming of a multicultural society and allies network. They have also introduced some programmes for school leavers to help young people of colour get into the firm apprenticeship programme and got together a committee of people from the multicultural network to creat a “Black Action Plan” to eradicate discrimination in the work place.
I’m active in the allies network and on the committee for the LGBTQ+ network within the company and they do fund pretty much whatever we suggest. We have also joined up with the multicultural network a few times for intersectionality seminars. So I would say, at least for my company there is a lot happening in response to the black lives matter protests last year and it makes me happy that it’s happening, even if it’s only just the start of the change needed. :)

Loved this episode except for the African person's comment. African American Cis Lesbian here. African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latinx people were stripped of most of our African culture, enslaved, and re-created what we could in this "New World." Us not knowing enough about Africa is a direct out growth of the brutality of slavery and the need for whites to make us more docile to control. Before he critiques, he needs to ask himself, what has his nation done to reclaim Blacks abroad, lost to enslavement? Our education system has kept us from any understanding of Blackness as positive, great, or even civilized. It really isn't until the protests of the 1960s that we begin to have people even being able to teach Black history from a non-pathologizing stance. I know the difference between Kente cloth and Wax Printed Cotton, because I gave myself an education. Many Black people in the US don't even have the money for a plane ride to another continent because of the systemic racist, capitalist, poverty that we have lived under for 400 years. So check your own privilege before you critique Black Americans. Love Monet & Bob till the end of time.

White cis straight woman . The more I learn about drag and drag culture and its origins the more I wonder how many white queens understand how there much of drag culture is rooted in BIPOC culture. And what white queens consequently need to give homage and respect to as a way to honor the roots.
2021-03-27 23:45:42 +0000 UTC
From the comments here, maybe you guys could consider doing a "census" on Patreon to know your demographics, and allow ppl to choose, of course, more than you ethnicity bc there's a lot of biracial or multiracial ppl.
2021-03-27 23:19:22 +0000 UTC
Have you two done a podcast about the drag race fandom yet? After the last few episodes of rpdr us and uk, seeing how the fandom treats the queens I'm really concerned. I genuinely feel like it's only a matter of time before a contestant of the show takes their own life. In the UK we have a tv show called Love Island, and 3 people from that show have committed suicide and its widely believed that it was due to the abuse they received from fans. I'd love to hear you both talk about it if you havent already x

So I actually work for a nonprofit in Boston that does Professional Development for BIPOC in the Business and Science industries and it has been very interesting to see the amount of attention that at least the companies we work with are putting into their employees. This has probably been one of the most successful years that we have ever had and I do believe it was because of the BLM movement during the summer and the corresponding reaction of everything from then on. We have seen that they are more receptive of hearing critique and are reaching out more for guidance on how to best address the issues they/their employees/we see at their companies

Lastly ... as someone who actually grew up and lives in Africa, I'm surrounded by a huge variety cultures and representations of blackness, I think it is important to listen and possibly have an interview with the person who called y'all out. I don't necessarily agree with their sentiment but I think their feelings are valid and they make good points. It would be interesting to see that "exchange" (pun intended).
2021-03-27 20:02:07 +0000 UTC
Also to add... I sometimes feel like I'm a diversity quotas wet dream since I'm gay, black and Asian 🤣
2021-03-27 19:56:30 +0000 UTC
I'm South African and my heritage is Asian from my dad's side and African and Dutch from my moms. In South Africa since I'm mixed, I'm called "colored" which I understand is an offensive term in the states but it's literally on things like job application forms when you have to indicate your race lol
2021-03-27 19:55:05 +0000 UTC
I work in the academic world, and I think in a LOT of places, there's been great lip service, and not a lot of action. I will also say that there are a handful of people who are doing things like antiracist teach-ins and workshops on how to think about changing the profession (I work in writing) to something more equitable. It's really a mixed bag - lots of people on the ground working really hard to do antiracist work in the university, and at the same time, lots of people who are not interested in doing that work beyond saying something that makes them sound good.

2021-03-27 10:59:03 +0000 UTC
i'm 3/4 native and 1/4 white, i live in texas, and it's usually the other gays that have a problem with me. i'm self employed now, but the last job i worked at, i was getting too close to a (straight) manager that another gay liked, so he repeatedly opened up HR cases against me until they eventually let me go because he outranked me. down here it's really a competition to be the "favorite" because that's all the validation some gays get down here. besides that, it's a lot of passive aggressive comments that i don't catch until i think about them later, but like i said, i'm self employed now for a reason LMFAO

It was all talk over at my workplace. I work for a big finance company who at top of the 2020 BLM movement said it was time for change. They were “with us”..the spiel..cut to our virtual town hall at the end of the year where an employee asked the CEO why the hires at their level, the big wigs, were reflecting that they did not adhere to the promise they made to work towards having diversity at the top. Of course the CEO took the path of lawyer-approved appeasement saying that they were hiring the “best” people for the job, not including race as a description for the job. But...why is it that the “best” people are not POC? (Which is a question I absolutely plan to bring up in our next town hall) Like at Monet’s prior workplace, the workers are diverse but board management is mostly white-presenting, cis-presenting men sprinkled with a couple white-cis-presenting women. The positions being filled in the board reflect what’s already there. I’d love to say more but I’m also trying to pay my bills and not get fired lol Love you both and thanks for the QUALITY content 😘

I’m an Iranian born cis woman who moved to Canada. Here I get mistaken for a Latina person occasionally and I just correct people and move on. But this one time someone called me technically white and it made me feel really uncomfortable. Nothing against white people but I don’t see myself as white and western society has never treated me like a white person.

Another person from the Netherlands here, but with a completely different experience. I went to a village school that was really diverse. It was a really good school with outstanding ratings, which I think might have made a difference. The school celebrated cultural differences and made sure each child’s background got attention and we were allowed to showcase and talk about it, so we all learned from each other. Because we were so young we all mixed and if someone had a language barrier they actively tried to get them up to speed and paired them with other kids to get them to a higher level quicker, so they were never isolated. Of course it wasn’t perfect, but they tried very hard and I consider myself lucky I had that experience.

Yo I'm latino. I'm a performer/actor in two different theme parks and i'd say the more established park is very diverse even in management. In the other "growing" park its almost scary how little diversity there is. Some of my coworkers and I have sat down and counted on hand how many of us are actually minorities in entertainment. There's only a few in the entire department as a whole. Low key scares me at work because it feels like I have to act a certain way most of the time. Sometimes its hard to pull yourself out from the narrative that you're only a diversity hire rather than a talented individual. Its interesting to perform and technically have fun as a job, but, be only one of the few people to recognize the lack of diversity and tons of micro aggressions.

Black and white here. 1) the hat is a full serve 2) you both bring so much joy to this teacher (during a goddamn pandemic)‘s life 3) I think that so many people reach out/stay tuned to y’all because the honesty and vulnerability that you share about culture (black or otherwise) is both endearing and insightful. I’m from southeast TN originally, so I can relate to a lot of what Bob says about Georgia. I’m always captivated by Monet’s experiences in St. Lucia and NYC as a queer kid of color. Keep doing what you do. Fuck them hoes. And yes, be African. WE HAD NO DAMN SAY IN LOSING OUR CULTURE AND CREATING A NEW ONE.

Black people in the Americas CANNOT APPROPRIATE AFRICAN CULTURE!!! What the actual f*?!?!??! We had no choice and were stolen from our homeland. I know some do not identify as African but as someone who considers myself African American, Brazilian and Cape Verdean, I absolutely identify as being of African origin, not to mention my skin and other features also make my origina very clear. I just got a DNA test back and was happy to finally put a name to my origins, which were majority Western and Central African countries countries amd ethnicities. While it is true that I am many other African descended people in the Americas do not know everything about our culture from our ancestors, we have inherent cultural norms and practices, in addition to physical attributes, that connect us to Africa. I have heard of some Africans expressing similar sentiment before but I cannot understand why any black person would express that to another black person, especially when Africans from all over the continent were taken from Africa to the Americas, Europe and even parts of Southeast Asia to be enslaved, and were taken without any way to remain in contact with our roots.

Biracial (black/white) cis woman here! I can say that white people are often uncomfortable when I discuss black culture around them because they feel excluded. Similarly if for example I listen to rock music around some of my black friends they would look at me sideways like “why you listening to this white people music?” I was exposed to so much growing up that I just grew an appreciation for all types of cultures and I love that and wish everyone else had the same experience

I definitely think y’all hit the nail on the head when it comes to ‘white culture’. White people who feel uncomfortable with different cultures being put in front of them have been too desensitized to the idea of the Midwestern perfect quiet family or the nuclear family idea. White families don’t even talk about real shit most of the time, it’s just all very surface level. At least that’s my white experience, in a white family. We don’t celebrate our Irish or English heritage because we’ve compartmentalized it. But I do think that where white kids can be exposed to the most diversity is definitely school. It’s the first time your really exposed to other kids and people for long periods of time. My theory is Depending on where your parents send you to school, will dictate how your able to view the world around you. Even growing up in a blue collar while family I got a great diverse education, so hearing you guys theorize and discuss the social aspects of race and culture is just so intriguing to me. Especially considering race is a construct that white people made up. Thank you lovely ladies 🤗

I’m a white skinned pansexual woman from the Netherlands. I don’t know my family’s exact background, but I have some HLAs normally seen in people from Asia. Some of my family members are more on the olive or beige side, but we have no idea where it comes from. I have health issues and have been made to feel less all my life. I saw my first drag show when I was sixteen and it was on a school trip, our teachers took us there. I’ve loved it ever since. I love fashion, art, theatre and dressing up, I’ve done drag just a few times, but wish I’d done more given how much I loved it. I studied a combination of marketing of culture and literature and I took a lot of cultural communications classes as I wanted to make sure I understood the background behind what I was seeing, reading or promoting as well as possible. Fortunately my teachers were from diverse backgrounds, so I actually learned from someone from inside the culture instead of someone who’d only observed it. My friends are from all over the world. I enjoy watching this show as it addresses such a large variety of topics.

First I love you guys so much. I am white cis woman and I agree with you guys on hanging out with people who have similar life experiences. My besties from my time in the military are mostly queer men, latinas or black women and we keep in touch monthly since we live all over the states now. I think we bonded since we were in a very toxic and masculine environment and we were all fairly young and left leaning in everything we do. But my friends i speak to every day and have a group chat with I grew up with and are all cis white women. I recently visited NOLA and on a tour around the city some girls from LA were talking to me and my white boyfriend about how they don't see many mixed race couples around and they asked us if the south is still mainly segregated. I recently moved to mississippi so I was confused by that statement because we see mix couples a lot. so I told them that its systematic but I don't think it is socially. I also felt weirded out because if someone who is black wants to date someone who is also black I wouldn't be mad about it. I truly think its just natural to relate to people who were raised similarly to you or have the same interests. I love you guys more than other queens because you guys keep it straight and will call people out when their looks are wrong. I used to watch raven and rajas photo ruview but i feel like they just compliment queens looks when they were actual trash. plus you guys are just peak comedy.

great episode, lots to think about. I’m intrigued by Monet saying they had two buses and the queens self-segregated on her season... I always thought Season 10 had the most racist plotlines/editing despite having the most amazing set of black queens, I find it stressful to rewatch parts despite loving most of the contestants. Could desegregated busing have helped??? Lol. & goes without saying but Monet winning All Stars wasn’t affirmative action, it was justice...! for the sponge!!
I’m a white American woman (cis + queer) and the only “white culture” I know is jokes about how white people don’t have culture or how white culture is finding bread spicy lol. Getting really excited about “white culture” sounds like a game for racists.
I live in Japan and Japanese people say a lot of crazy racist shit right to my face, sometimes about me/white people, but more often about other non-Japanese ethnicities, like Black people or Chinese or Latinx. I know it’s partly because American media stereotypes get exported here but aren’t balanced with having a lot of direct access to friends and co-workers of other races. Things are changing though and BLM has helped a lot here too.

I hope y’all do a stereo live about that african girl’s comment. I would love to chime in. The whole thing REEKED of anti-blackness and it’s common to come across in Africa. If y’all were to do a stereo live or patreon exclusive I got some words for ms thing too💀

I am just so grateful to be able to learn all these insights from you and all of you in the comments here. Growing up in the countryside of The Netherlands I am about as white as they get, met my first POC when I went to high school at 12 years old and looking back on that still blows my mind. I was so unaware of the incredible amount of different cultures we have in this world. Yes, that came with a lot of problematic things ingrained in me that have turned out to be way deeper than I could've ever imagined but I just want to express my grattitude to all of you for sharing your experiences and allowing me to educate myself with the work you are putting out there. Tons of love from Holland <3

Indigenous POC from Australia here.... (Bob, your Aussie accent is getting there.. not quite there yet, but getting there) .... (Monet, definitely support your choices but No... why ruin your beautiful face?). So pleased that you are able to seriously get SR movie development going..
As for the sermon forced upon you in the comments..... Bitch please! Why don’t they go write a dissertation that no one will read......
I am here and pay for Monet and Bob in all of your humanity, grace and shit/real talking .... not them with their white coded defender of the black faith monologue.... speaking of performative!
Me thinks the commentator is ontologically white and their logics wield a colonised epistemology! #JustSayin

Cis pansexual biracial girl ♡ I'm half black half white from California. This podcast gives me life!!!! I personally think Monet is right about some white Americans being disgruntled about feeling like they don't have a culture to call their own. I saw my white mom struggle with this on a regular basis; sometimes she would say stuff like "Why can't I have White Pride on the back of my car when everyone else can have Latino/Black Pride?" It took me til my teen years to realize how problematic she was.

My Hot take regarding school numbering — the numbering of NYC public schools was a slick tool of white supremacy.
They can easily determine class level by if you went to PS 123 or if you’re at Forbes Academy for the Upper Class.
It’s just a clever way for those in the upper echelon to make it clear that the peons are NOT in the same league as their kids who go to named schools.
Disclaimer: this is a just a theory, based on nothing. But it makes sense in my head.

to clarify, I also apply this "safe space" logic to why you have so many fans of color. We can all Kiki with you or as a group of fans in the forum you create with your content and enjoy that level of safety/comraderie in a way we may not be able to with other queens' "fandoms". But that's not to say I don't also Stan some white queens. I do, but I'm just wearier of interacting with their fan bases and don't engage as much and therefore likely won't have the same level of devotion or active participation in said fandom
2021-03-25 06:33:07 +0000 UTC

hey yall! Cis straight Chicana here. Not sure if you check the comments that don't come in live but to your point about how you all appeal to BIPOCs and how Monet's college experience had the POCs/black students sticking together, it's not so much about doiing anything to facilitate diversity so much as the fact that BIPOCs have an unspoken understanding of our shared traumas and daily dangers we endure just being ourselves, so in my opinion it is about gravitating toward a SAFE SPACE where we don't have to tread around the fuckery that we may encounter in white spaces. It's just a safety in numbers thing that can be either conscious or unconscious. I will say that I don't view white people congregating in the same way, in my opinion they don't share those traumas and don't need a safe space in the same way. But I also have never been white and don't know what's in their head

Most of these companies who posted their black squares and infographics on Instagram have gone right back to the same old same old. And in SOME cases that isn't really for lack of trying per se. It's more about the fact that racism and white supremacy are so deeply entrenched in the very foundation of American culture, that there's no way that simply hiring a few black people or appointing a Diversity Officer or doing racial bias training will be enough to see any noticeable difference.

Hello y’all. I’m a Black, Queer cis-male educator who specializes in diversity, equity, and inclusion work within my field. I love this chat and the conversations you two are having around diversity, your drive for a more inclusive drag community, and expansion of space and platform for the many communities that participate in and are often overshadowed in queer community. You two drew me into this world because I can see my Blackness and the fluidity of gender expression in you both in ways that didn’t exist for me growing up. So much much love to y’all. Just lemme know when you wanna Kiki it up and add that social scientist to the chat, henny 💁🏾♀️🥰 . Much❤️from TX

Black and bi babyyy! I honestly found this podcast by accident. It was maybe 6 or 7 episodes in at the time. I went to YouTube and just typed in "podcast." Sibling rivalry was like the 5th option and I had no idea y'all even had a podcast! So I started listening because I was a fan of both of you, but I stayed because you both had me laughing so hard, and you talked about black culture in a way that was relatable to me. I get called Oreo because I love theater and Broadway and typical "white" things (so fucking stupid 😒) but then here's Bob in a whole play and Monet showing off her Opera skills and then y'all start talking about curry goat and my Jamaican ass just LIVESSSS!!!! You two hit so many points and your interests span so many areas so I think you're able to relate to a lot of people for that alone. Plus you make it fun and conversational. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the room and I throw my opinions in and talk right back to y'all!! You bring up important topics but you make it funny and allow people to be educated even when they may not necessarily be looking for it. I love it!!

Talking about white people saying the n word, I'm white, my best friend of 12 years is white also, she grew up in black communities and has black family members and 99% of the time she's very anti racist but when she's singing along to a song she will say the n word and it drives me crazy. Her sister who is black doesn't mind so I think that's why she does it but I never know what to say to her because in her mind her sisters opinion on it always trump's mine and maybe she's right about that, I honestly don't know. It's like the one situation that I find myself being unsure of how to handle a white person saying the n word.

1/4 Irish, 1/4 Ukrainian, 1/2 Persian gay male, Identify as white. Do any other white Americans from a mixed background like me feel like you don't identify strongly with your heritage and don't really fit in with those communities so are sort of just "nebulous white American"? I feel like I don't especially belong to any of those groups but also I am not that bothered by it.
Also do any other gay guys feel like on some level they relate to other minority groups through humor? I feel like when you are from an oppressed minority of any type sometimes humor keeps you going and I have always found that very relatable across different groups. Does that make sense?

Black, cis somewhere in the queer woman in LA. I started watching drag race basically the very beginning of this year and found the podcast along the way and really wanted to see the visuals that I was missing out on. So I joined the Patreon. I have nothing against the white queens, I just relate more to the Black queens. I’m from a majority Black place and I went to an HBCU but I’m definitely not around us now so this is really great for me. I also think the last comment was wild. My dad is from South Africa, but I’ve only ever been in America. The “Diaspora Wars” as someone called it is ridiculous to me, especially in 2021, but I will say that I’ve been keenly aware of some of the negative feelings Black Americans can have towards Africans and vice versa since I was a kid. I’d love an exclusive or even an entire episode about it.

White americans being so proud to be "american" is part of american exceptionalism, i.e. the belief that america is somehow particularly special and superior than the rest of the world, the same ideology that fuels our wars and interventionism across the globe. I think this originated from the ideologies of some of the first american colonizers, who came here on a religious mission to bring salvation to the world which seems to continue to this day. I would argue that america's cultural production is basically entirely by descendants of american chattel slavery or by others using their cultural productions, and therefore america's cultural influence across the world, which translates to capital, is also mostly owed to those descendants. Trap style hiphop (nearly fused with pop now), rock, house, streetwear fashion, the boy/girl band phenomenon, viral dances, down to simple slang such as "cool", these are cultural productions by descendants of american chattel slavery (that they aren't reimbursed for). So in that sense I'd say they are the true "heart" of modern america

Black male here. I would say your platform is VERY pro-black. Which I live, and you’re vocal about it. However I think both of your individual and collective talents and personality is easily identifiable toward a wide range of fans. So your appeal is very diverse. But your platform is very pro-black. But not “aggressive”...j/k j/k...bob is VERY aggressive. Lol, but for real, j/k. 2021-03-25 00:51:20 +0000 UTC
I think that part of the reason black american culture is rich and nuanced is because black people socialized during slavery and (failed) reconstruction/integration, forced to improvise, innovate, and their emotional journeys informed the culture and music that they created, gospel, blues, rock (and that white people later capitalized and decontextualized). And the undead ghost of chattel slavery sustains this cycle, for instance vogue/ballroom are almost entirely decontextualized from their lower class black and latinx roots, hip hop and rap turned into a play-thing for white children. Put simply, most black people were/are facing regular opposition for who they are, going through many experiences, vs most white people who have alot going for them and can easily opt out of considering race, don't have to deal with the same daily struggles, and this is reflected in cultural production. So as a white american I don't really think there's "white culture" other than resting on laurels and manically congregating to terrorize black people and other people of color when they want to project their self hatred and guilt onto them, but I would refer to that as american settler culture, and the american concept of whiteness (and blackness) was created by this american settler culture. White americans have many varying european heritages/religions (for example eastern orthodox vs catholics vs protestants); there can be significant cultural differences between americans of wasp (white anglo saxon protestant) descent vs working class italian or irish catholics, etc. But they do all have the common threads of christianity and racism, particularly anti-blackness

I'm a bisexual Emirati/Arab american cis male and while we have to mark that we are white on documentation, it has been contested by the community. Simply because the Arab experience is not a white one. With the Anti-Arab and Anti-Muslim sentiments, post 9/11 America, etc. you simply cannot just say Arabs are "White" . We don't quite fit in in white spaces, but nor do we fully fit in in minority spaces. So I am glad I have found friends, and communities such as this.

I just want to say that Bob, Monét, Jacob, and Mitch y'all are on a hot streak. All the content you all have out out this past month is amazing. I'm not sure how much of this was actually about Diversity. I was really enjoying the WandaVision talk and the stories from your past, but I will say for the ten or fifteen minutes that you all truly focused on it, I couldn't stop agreeing, clapping, and talking at the tv while I was watching. I appreciate everything Bob and Monét said. It's all very accurate especially as a Black woman who grew up in a predominantly white space (two other black kids at my elementary school), 50 black ppl in my hometown. I would love a part two breaking down why the girl at the end with the inaccurate comment is wrong. I love the way you both eloquently check people and call them out. Thank you for making some of the best paid content I subscribe to. ❤️

OMG this episode really hit me because talking about pedophilia is something that is so hard to talk about because when I was a child my older brother molested me a couple of years ago and I talked to my sister about it and then I found out that she also have been molested by hem when she was a child and he did so many things to her that was worse than what happened to me I'm now 19 years old I'm gay and I live with my family In saudi Arabia If that wasn't a challenge already but now with remembering what happened to me and knowing all the other things that happened to my sister I really don't know what to do on top of all of this my brother who molested me and my sister still live with us in the same house and my parents don't know about all these things about hem and they love hem and I sometimes want to till them but it would kill them knowing all of this my mom and my father already have mental Issues and I don't want to make there lives even harder.
so I just want to share my story
Anyway love you both bob and monet 🥰❤️

2021-03-24 23:42:55 +0000 UTC
It's weird to me that the commenter toward the end of the episode feels the need to police Black self-expression. Your conversation on whiteness was really interesting and important though. White people need to do the work to discover their roots like Black Americans and Carribeans have been forced to do due to colonization and the literal criminalization of Black self-expression for centuries. Cultural genocide against Black Africans whose tribes were sold by the ethnicities that survived colonization is real. History is constantly trying to erase us, and now white people are trying to enjoy the culture Black people have cultivated through struggle because they refuse to do the labor it takes to find their own ancestry and hold their ancestors accountable and reclaim the culture that Christianization and other imperialism in Europe for example also tried to erase. That's the reason their ancestors came here in the first place: to escape the kinds of people their descendants would become. I felt like this was missing from y'all's conversation on cultural appropriation. I felt like y'all weren't willing to hold white people accountable for participating in the erasure of their own identities through the violence of Blackness without Black people. Blackness without Black people, or cultural appropriation of things like dreads, braids, language, etc. are white people demonstrating that while they have evolved, so has capitalism. While they are expressing admiration, they are also in a way consenting to our erasure as the rightful owners of that culture. Which is definitely different from Black Americans and Carribeans trying to piece together what remains of their African identities due to Colonialism. I think Carribeans have been a lot more successful in that, which is shown through the tradition of Hodou in Haiti, a blend of indigenous African and Carribean spiritual practice. But Black Americans have been producing culture without being the recipients of the consumption of that culture literally for centuries so it's bold to come for you. Lmk how you feel about this! I love y'all and want to see you do good with your platform. This is all to say, I really don't understand why Thorgy Thor has dreads out of drag, thank you!

Boring Old Straight Afro Latina check! I love your content so much especially when you don’t talk about drag race. I honestly find your conversations about diversity, race, gender, culture to be the most interesting. And as an NYC native Monet is correct with her fashion. You will still see tims and bubble jackets in black hoods to this day. If Bob is not hangin out in Harlem on that island he won’t know. And to speak on identification. I identify as an Afro Latina, my mom was born and raised in Honduras but because I don’t speak spanish fluently everyone else will tell me otherwise. Sometimes I don’t even mention my roots because I hate explaining and proving my heritage to people. They see a black chick and that’s all that registers. Anyway ... shout out to Pookey, and my peeps on Sutphin blvd QUEENS!!!

I am born and raised in South Africa and I just wanted to mention how problematic it is for people to question somebody's blackness.. It is impossible for a black person to culturally appropriate black culture. I believe that just because circumstances have prevented many black people from knowing their ancestors exact origins does not mean they can't express their blackness/africanness in the way they choose. I found it interesting how in a previous podcast Bob mentioned feeling disconnected with his African roots, and I, a black transwoman living in Africa feel so disconnected as well. Anywhere in the world I visually read as black but in my own country black and biracial people are separated into two entirely different race categories - black, & colored. I am considered Colored because my father is black and my mother is Indian. I find it crazy that anyone can feel they have the right to question or dispute someone's blackness when they don't know our life experiences. I have traveled to other places in the world and have never been referred to as "colored", I have always been perceived as a black woman due to my skin tone and textured hair.. Imagine being born in Africa & still having your blackness disputed... With that I just wanna say I've been a fan since both your seasons of drag race and followed your careers & I think its the most beautiful thing in the world every time I see Bob and Monet in African print and/or natural hairstyles & I wanna let you know how powerful it is that you as African Americans have made me, an African, love & appreciate my blackness more than I ever did before. I love you guys and thank you for the amazing content.

Hi!
I definitely identify with this, 100%.
I’m mixed race, my dad was from Ghana and my mum from England. But on my Ghanaian side there is Dutch blood from colonisation so I don’t look black but I don’t look white. People are always very inquisitive. I never lived in Ghana either.
I feel a disconnect with my culture and I find myself admiring the strong, distinct & diverse African American culture, perhaps for compensation.
I also live in Australia now which is mostly white.
I do try to remember there are plenty of mixed race people out there and that we are extremely diverse in our features and cultures. ✊🏼 ✊🏽

I've seen more diverse hires at work and more promises. But the issue is always leadership. I rarely see poc in roles with impact and actual power. Which means decisions and strategic moves are often very white and not inclusive.

All of this!
I'm a Black Production Manager and Stage Manager. I've toured the world and rarely have I ever seen any one black on the venues staff (union crew, foh, etc) It's hard to be in a industry where there are less people that look like you. You naturally make friends with those who have similar schedules. Often times your work friends are your only friends for those long periods of time away.

As a queer Latinx individual, I feel so great and emboldened when watching Sibling Rivalry. Like let's be honest, the fans saying Bob/Monet bully Utica are the white fans. Monet and Bob just created such a inviting space for other QTPOC.

Yes I this episode! As a queer black cis man I just wanted to chime in here and say some thanks. I have lots of issues with folks coming for any part of Black (African American) Americans expression of self. We largely have no record of where we came from. We’re the only group of Americans with little to no connection to our homeland. It’s petty but we should be able to dress and where what ever the fuck makes us happy. I think one of the first steps to reparations should be a national ancestry project specifically targeted to building or rebuilding our ancestral paths to where all black Americans are now to help to heal by giving us more knowledge of where we come from and who we’re connected to. Anyway love y’all. Portland Oregon here.

Black, Cis, hetero woman here, Nigerian living in England. I would also like to add that as a BLACK/AFRICAN person. True there are several cultures in Africa and would be beneficial to educate yourself on the exact places your inspiration/outfits etc originate from. The Utica fan just spat a lot of unnecessary vile that contradicts what they supposedly stand for, Even africans pull references from one another and any black American thats not "uppity" and genuinely seeks their root is always welcome to. Saying black Americans cant participate in African culture is stupid (respectfully) and XENOPHOBIC.

Both Bob and Monet are correct about fashion. I live in a small town in South Ga (an hour from Columbus😉) and since I was a teen in the 80s, fashion from NY wouldn’t make it here until it was no longer popular in NY. However, I always feel like the country mouse in the big city when I visit my son in Atlanta, because the fashion is amazing and worlds apart from my little town!

I’m mixed race [white, Guamanian (Pacific Islander), and Eastern European]. But I get told all the time that I’m just white. Honestly, it irks me because half my heritage gets completely erased just because I’m light complected. But if you look at my dad, and my sister they got the caramel skin and I just got the white skin tone from my mom but all my other features are not white associated, almond eyes, thick curly hair, lots of dark body hair, and my dark brown almost black eye color.
I suppose my question really is do other white mixed folk have this issue? Like one time I dated this guy who told me I wasn’t white enough for him. Rude. And then I get rejected by people of color for not being a person of color. Where do I fit in?

Bob and Monet created such a safe space for queen women that a lot of other queens (mainly white cis male queens) haven’t been able to do. They don’t generalise that all women who love drag are straight 14 y/o girls, and they don’t speak vulgarly about vaginas or women. been a fan of many queens over the years and when I joined Patreon it was so different to be in an inclusive environment that acknowledges even just the existence of queer women. It’s really great.

Mostly white/Nigerian/Indian attendees and black/Hispanic workers). Currently, I say NIGGA all the time at work. Mostly referring to 2 of my bad ass kids running around. I will say in regards to the topic of white culture, I think that so much of the anger white people have to that comes from the fact that white American culture is usually synonymous with American culture. So now a lot of white people take a lot of issue with other cultures taking the space of “their own.” I’m a white guy from Georgia and anytime I talk to my dad or someone on his side of the family about it, they immediately bristle at the topic because to them, it’s a loss or a transition of power to make space for other cultures in American culture, which is by and large the same as their own “white culture” in their mind. That whole side of my family is just so deeply entrenched in that mind set that the concept of other cultures or identities occupying “their space” is breaking the rules to them.

But yall are right in that the entry level warehouse workers are majority immigrant, black and brown, but middle management is still a vast majority white. I called out the hiring managers for lack of middle mgmt diversity and they looked me in my eye and said "how can I be biased, I only see a resume and a name" like girl PLEASE 🙄

I started watching the YouTube channels during the beginning of quarantine because you two make me laugh so much and the content is so relatable. The friendship that you two have is amazing to me, listening to the podcast makes me feel like part of the family. 😊

Hi bob and monet! Can you guys talk about your opinions on people of mixed race? I’m half black & half white and i always have felt more connected with my black culture, however, I feel like don’t get taken seriously by some of the black community because I am half white. Also I know a lot of bi-racial people who feel like they have no identity or have issues finding their identity because of being from 2 different cultures and never quite fitting with either. Would love to know your opinions!

Mexicana here! I work in galleries in NYC, and I will say after the summer of 2020 and BLM, the art world is fuckin shook and reorganizing like crazy. even David Zwirner has created an all-Black task force to open a Black operated gallery under the Zwirner name. There were 54 new Black curators appointed to major museum and gallery positions in 2020! it's really good progress after years of gatekeeping, but we need more POC gallerists!!! any of my POC fellow patrons out there who are interested in working in the art world...DO IT!!!! We have so many huge POC artists that are up and coming, and 95% of people who work in galleries are white, its gotta change! I love you guys <3333

No lie I’m a black male and I love ya because ya are smart funny and ya look good in and out of drag. I was rooting for ya on drag race so instinctively I wanted to keep up with ya once the seasons ended. But I assumed ya didn’t have many black friends either just because I associate mainstream drag with white people. I see how the fandom of drag race gravitates to the white queens and even when ya talking about dating it seems like ya mention the white men ya have encountered around the world much more than any black men. But ya aren’t “white washed” ya black af and naturally ya celebrate ya blackness a lot and I can relate to being in a lot of white spaces and not assimilating.

Racial bias starts earlier than people understand. Babies are able to identify different races AND assign different meanings to those races at less than 1 year old, usually before they can even walk and talk.

I'm a cis straight black woman from Barbados. I follow a lot of the other queens on social media but you two are the only creators I follow on Patreon etc because the content you post is very relatable and you cover a wide range of topics. Also I have considered joining other communities on Patreon but what they offer is not as much as what you offer. We get a lot of great content and exclusives from you guys and it feels like truly being a part of a community. I also love your relationship. Over time you have become my favourite entertainers period. My daughter and partner are probably tired of hearing about Bob and Monet. As far as the last letter you read, we do wear African print in Barbados, specifically in February which is celebrated as African Heritage month. At this time all the schools and many work places have a day to dress in African wear and there are competitions for best dressed, best hair etc. And the children do projects on different African countries etc. As you both said all opinions are valid but the writer of the letter should do more research. And you did call it last week Bob... say anything about a "white twink" and someone will come for you.

I think the conversation about the tensions, however deep they may be, between Africans and those of the African diaspora and African Americans. It’s complex as we are the oppressed yet part of an oppressive empire where are voices are, in some ways, over represented in the conversation

Totally agree with Monet on being able to tell where different black peeps are from based off appearance. Of course sometimes you get it wrong but its still fun to guess. Black cis woman from London here 🙆🏾♀️ and I love trying to tell whether people are African or west Indian. And then comparing that to black peeps from the states, I cant quite put my finger on what it is but we all look a little different. Some of it is based on features and some based on styling.

2021-03-24 09:46:08 +0000 UTC
Okay OMG I really am excited for this and just wanted to ask Mixed! im black and white but i am proud to call myself black. I'm very fair skinned so I'm kinda "white passing" some have said. I always struggled with identifying as black cause i didntt know if i was allowed to. It just scared me cause growing up when i told people i was black, no one believed me and their arguement was that since I didn't look black I wasn't. It caused a lot of issues with me mentally but NOW I embrace it regardless. I STILL struggle with one thing and its because I don't know!! So don't make fun of me but.... Is it bad for me to say the N word? like I'm black I know that but, the word used to make me feel angry and furious if I heard anyone say it so i never said it. But upon starting this podcast and listening more ii have learned that the word is very rooted in our culture and its almost prideful? in a way? idk I just kinda wanted to hear your opinion on it, regardless I love yall!! :)

Replying to your question in the video:
I'm a gay asian (filipino) male and what made me stan you guys for life is your humour. Maybe it's because I watched a lot of movies that had black humour type of jokes growing up so I really connect with your jokes.
