Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose day, and now that we're past the Memorial Day weekend here in North America, it's unofficially the start of summer vacation season! So, what better way to celebrate than by making you extremely paranoid about your own plans?! This week's video is a fun(?) look at some people who rented AirBNBs only to find out they were unwittingly puttin' on a show for the owners. Enjoy!
Buckley looks at a story involving a group of women on vacation who found hidden cameras in their AirBNB, as well as a case where someone found a hidden camera in an AirBNB bedroom and the judge made an insane ruling about it. Can you believe these unlicensed hotels are also owned by creeps!?
The original idea was to find a cheaper alternative. Especially now, hotels can be costly. But yeah, they’ve really gone down the wayside.

It's not just some technicality. The point is that the police HAVE to get a warrant. No warrant, no evidence.
It's not even that hard for them to get one, so judges tend to get pretty strict about the consequences for them not even bothering.

You really have to be careful and make sure they get a warrant. It IS illegal but the argument is "well it's my house I'm allowed to have cameras in it and do what I want". Obviously that won't hold up unless the policework is bad, like it was in the second part of the video.

Amazing timing to watch this video, I'll be flying to Naples in a few hours and have booked two airBNBs, will be checking for cameras for sure now

We used to play it as kids in the basement, though we never had a setup like that! We'd just put a couple toys or something spaced out a few feet apart to mark the goals, and we all had mini sticks as souvenirs from going to hockey games live. Play it on days when we couldn't get enough people together for a game of road hockey or if the weather was too awful.

I think the craziest thing in this video is the mini stick hockey

I agree. Also, staying in someone else’s property just feels weird.

People buying houses to turn into airbnbs here have driven house prices and rental prices through the roof. They need to be taxed or made illegal.

Never really understood the appeal of AirBnB, or Verbo, or any of those private property rentals. Maybe for a larger group or family it makes more sense than renting multiple hotel rooms, if a villa or a suite isn't available. However, there's no crazy rules for hotels, and all the dumb stuff your AirBNB host would charge you for, is already included in the room charge. Hotels also generally follow legal regulations and guidelines that protect the guests.

I slightly understand where the judge is coming from. It’s probably just the way the laws are written right now. Do I still think that’s fucked? Yes, yes I do. I think you should be acknowledged as a “tenant” or a “hotel guest” if you stay in an AirBnB which would grant you some rights of privacy, and probably not allow the owner to record you. Find me in the Marriott lobby and we can debate this more!
