It's Friday and you know the drill, it's time to watch the weekend video before everyone else! It's always fun to make fun of a creep, ESPECIALLY when there's now a legal court decision that says he's LEGALLY a creep and it's not slander or libel to say otherwise! And so, now that R. Kelly has been found guilty of some incredibly heinous crimes, crimes we've all effectively known about for like 20 years, there's no legal consequences for making fun of him! Isn't that neat? Anyway, as usual, this weekend's video is about more than just the subject matter, as we look at how YouTube handles artists who have done awful things (spoiler: they always make sure to act in their own best interests first). Enjoy!
After R. Kelly's trial resulted in a guilty verdict, companies effectively tripped over each other to be the first to announce that he'd been banned from their platform. YouTube waited a few days before making their announcement, banning two of R. Kelly's channels, citing that allowing them to stay up could "have the potential to cause widespread harm". If they truly believe this though... why did they leave his music up? And not just on all the channels who have uploaded his content without permission over the years... but on YouTube's OWN OFFICIAL MUSIC CHANNELS!? Buckley looks at the laughable decisions, and suggests some better options.
