EARLY ACCESS: What Are NFTs? Ask Lindsay Lohan & Kings of Leon!

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/XrkHF4VvQ1c

Remember years ago when the iPhone first came out, and someone made an app that cost $1000 with the whole idea being that, by buying it, you were proving you had so much money you could waste $1000 on an app that did absolutely nothing? That happened 12 years ago (The app was called "I am Rich" for those of you who'd like to know more about it). I wonder if, 12 years ago, people thought "ok but this is the dumbest thing people would ever spend money on", and if those people now know about NFTs. Enjoy your early look at this weekend's Dose!

NFTs, or "Non-Fungible Tokens" have been a hot topic on the Internet. But what EXACTLY is an NFT? Buckley breaks it down by trying to compare it to something we all know about, and gives you some infuriating news about how much money Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, The Kings of Leon, and a guy named "Beeple" have made from selling 1s and 0s.

Glad the algorithm's finally working in my favor! Also, glad you're enjoying the older stuff, I usually try and make them so that even if the actual story it's based on is somewhat time-sensitive, the actual points being made could apply to so many other things.

After watching this video, YouTube has started recommending your past videos everytime i open the app, which is a welcome change. I've been listening to tons of your content over the past few days on auto-play and boy is it enjoyable background noise (even if the content in the videos is old, it still is entertaining to hear your options)

“The digital feeling of a car battery being hooked up to your eyelids...” As probably one of 20 people who like that Lindsay Lohan song, this is so funny it hurts. Also, Lohan would have rocked in La La Land.

Yep that was the exact trajectory my thought process took when I first read about it just the other week.

Jesus Christ, every time I think people have found the most stupid way to spend money, they seem to top themselves. Back ten years ago there was a word for this, and that word was “scam”.

I'm honestly glad you did this. I've been hearing about this a nft stuff a lot. Just seemed like another scheme to part people from their money. That's pretty much what it is.

Yeah the Retro game market has been going up considerably over the last few years. I don't know when it'll settle down, but every collectible eventually does. But now imagine if Nintendo put out an NFT of a rom of Super Mario Bros for like $10,000? It would be absurd.

Adam Buckley

Recently I've been on a retro gaming collecting spree. Nostalgia, picking up old games for Gamecube, PS1, and PS2. Admittedly I've paid more than I normally would to get a game. But I have a limit. $100 is my soft limit and $150 is my hard limit. Because the price can still go up. I bought Fire Emblem in gamecube a couple years back for $100. At the time I thought that was way too much to spend on a Gamecube game even though I REALLY wanted to play it legitimately. I bought it, and it's now worth $300+. Last September I bought a PS3 game for $30. That same game is now valued on eBay as $150.

Yeah, I'm actually thinking about doing a followup to this video already (probably as a Patreon exclusive) about some other copyright issues that have come up as a result of NFTs. Buying physical music, to a certain degree at least you know you have it. Like a movie. I watch my DVDs quite often because they're not dependent on an Internet connection, or on the whims/licensing deals of a streaming service (if Netflix pulls all of Tarantino's movies, I have them to watch whenever I want). Of course, they have problems with media degradation too, a DVD won't last forever, same with a CD potentially, but I'd like to think it's at least a little more secure to own than, say, a picture or some mp3s being hosted on a website that only came into existence 6 months ago.

Even in the case of Digital Art, I still take pride in a nice high quality print to hang up. Something about that transformation from digital to print just elevates the work.

First time hearing of of NFT. I’m a huge fan of commissioning artists and buying art, but if I can’t put it on my wall to enjoy and show off, I don’t see the point. 🤷‍♀️

Gabz

I think people have demonstrated that they will spend their money on anything if it means bragging rights. People still buy physical music to either claim they own an artists’ music or for collection purposes. As for NFT’s from a music industry standpoint, my biggest problem is that anyone can make an NFT of an artist’s song without their consent and make money off it (which can qualify as copyright infringement).
