This one was an exercise of trying to keep the energy of the image without trying to be super realistic. In the end I figured out a pretty neat way of painting trees is from dark to light; painting the dark silhouette of the shapes I wanted then using a lighter local color to give it detail and depth.
The overall goals of these paintings is learning how to match the energy of the reference image without trying to be as realistic or as detailed as possible. Like finding what details are the most important parts of the image and trying to bring that across in as few a lines as possible. I think it came out a relative success, and I'm pretty happy with the end result! :>
