You guys got a little too hung up on “The Shining”, but “Dies Irae” is a lot older than “The Shining”. The episode has nothing to do with “The Shining”, but with life, death, and judgment (“Dies Irae” is mass for the dead). The episode is a “Waiting For Godot” thing…a “meaning of life” thing. It’s a clever kind of philosophy based episode, but too high brow and academic for Sunny. But basically the idea is to look at the game of life and whether it has purpose or if it’s purely absurd and pointless. So should you embrace absurdity and have fun now, or hang onto some sort of purpose in hopes that there will be a reward at the end for winning at the game of life.
The show runners were using all this as a way to think about if the show’s not fun to make anymore, then should they even keep making it.
Like I said, it’s way too dense for an episode of Sunny.
Also, Rutherford Be Crazy is based on American president Rutherford B. Hayes.

So for some additional context others haven't provided (I don't think), when they talk about not having fun anymore, the actors have been candid that the show kind of fell into a rut and they were going through the motions because they were all so busy with other projects, shows, and movies. This was them recognizing that and saying they were going to get away from the formula that has let them get by, but they weren't enjoying it anymore.
I think that's one reason why the show has kind of gotten better the last two seasons, is the team recommitted to each other and the show to do things the way they want, take risks, and have fun with it again, even if it means risking the show losing popularity and ending sooner, when they could've kept with the formula with mediocre success for longer.

In the play Godot never arrives, so the fact he does in this and they shoot him is very always sunny. Dennis gets very angry when mac and dee go off and have fun (in life), because they are meant to be like him, patiently waiting for godot

A play about the meaning of life and the absurdity of existence. Basically replace them talking about "the game" with them talking about life. I think the humour is in knowing the original text, kind of like the lethal weapon episodes. If you know the original, part of the laughs come from seeing it twisted.

This is the always sunny version of the play "Waiting for Godot"

Rewatch the episode and replace 'laser tag' with 'the show they've been doing for 14-seasons". It's not my favorite episode, but just like "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award' there is a meta discussion about the show.
Edit: I didn't see this had already been posted a bunch, so let me add this. I like the idea of Frank being just a monster running around, as a representation of Danny Devito himself.
Danny is an incredible actor with a long litany of work in TV, film, and theater. Yet Frank over the years has led to him just being kind of a gross architecture. I like the joke that Frank/Danny hadn't realized that's what he became.

i'd put this season wayyy above 13 personally but i get it, the season was oddly paced and all the meh episodes are one after another. This one has some great lines (tight dumper) but the shining music def suggests a grander climax that never comes. oh well! onto 15 ! next two seasons are better than the previous two imo so should be fun

I agree with you that The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award is better... but this one is not in my bottom 3 episodes.

Not sure if you guys missed that this is another meta commentary episode? You've picked up on most of those in the past but didn't mention it at all.

This is my least favorite episode lol. I get that it is supposed to be meta about continuing the show, but it is just boring and unfunny to me.
I think they do the meta thing much better in The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award. This one feels more like random writer's room conversations they frankensteined into an episode.

I'm also very surprised you guys didn't pick up on how meta this episode is " laser tag " is them doing " Always Sunny " Dennis references they have played the game the longest (Sunny being the longest running live action comedy ever), but they never win anything all they have to show for it is the dollar dollar bills (Money). The whole episode was them saying they weren't having fun doing the show anymore and wanting to end it. I think this episode is much better on re-watch when you understand what they are going for.

What!? This season is much better than 13 and 1 IMO. Season 14 is my 3rd lowest ranked one though.
